GREENBERG: Top Plays of the Week

Flyers columnist looks at the moments that stood out this past week

by Jay Greenberg @NHLFlyers

Prettiest Goal - Claude Giroux's head quivered back and forth like a bobblehead before making a move towards his backhand that sent Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak sliding the wrong way. Giroux stayed on his forehand and scored the winning goal in the Flyers 3-2 shootout victory. See for yourself… again

Best Pass - By Giroux, on the move and perfectly into Jake Voracek's wheelhouse for a one-timer that gave Petr Mrazek no chance to come across on time for the overtime winner against Detroit.

Player of the Week - Giroux. See Above + Added a goal in Montreal.

Best Performance by a Defenseman - Radko Gudas at Brooklyn. Broke up two two-on-ones.

Best Save - Michal Neuvirth's pokecheck to foil John Tavares in overtime against the Islanders. The goalie was faster than one of the best sets of hands in the league.

Best Coaching Move - To give Neuvirth three straight starts even though he gave up a bad goal in each of them. Flyers have to get either Neuvirth or Steve Mason playing to his capabilities, doesn't matter which one first. We are presuming Mason will get his chance to start a run Tuesday night when the Red Wings come back to town.

Best Screen - By Wayne Simmonds on Giroux's goal in Montreal. Carey Price needed an x-ray to find the puck, which went by him without a flinch.

Best Move - Chris Vandevelde outhustled Thomas Tatar up the slot, took Brayden Schenn's setup, and pulled to his backhand to beat Petr Mrazek and get the Flyers on the board against the Red Wings.

Biggest Little Thing - Nick Cousins took Mike Green to the net to clear room for Schenn's pass to Vandevelde.

Best Win - 3-2 in a shootout in Brooklyn. On second game of a back-to-back outplayed a rested Islander team almost throughout. Minimum of breakdowns. Might have been the smartest game the Flyers have played in this early season.

Neatest Feat - Mark Streit, 11 years in the league, could not remember ever scoring with the goalie pulled until the one that tied up Buffalo, then he did it again eight days later against Detroit.

Best Defensive Play - Voracek pokecheck on Gustav Nyquist to foil a Red Wing chance in overtime. Next trip down, Voracek scored to win the game.

Nicest Moment - Roman Lyubimov's first NHL goal.

Funniest Quote - Asked about all these first-period deficits and comebacks, Lyubimov said, "That's our style."

Best Shot - By Andrew MacDonald, low and just off the ice that Mrazek couldn't hold in his glove, enabling Lyubimov's rebound goal. Not hard or deceptive or into a tight opening, but we're trying to make a point here: Flyers miss the net too much. It is much harder today to get the puck through all the shotblockers, sure, leading to a lot of shooters trying to be too fine. But the shot six inches off the ice is still the one hardest for the goalie to glove and easiest to redirect.
