Over the next seven days, the Philadelphia Flyers will host a slew of community events across the Greater Philadelphia Region as part of an extended Hockey Weekend Across America (February 19-21) celebration. Created by USA Hockey in 2008, Hockey Weekend Across America celebrates and promotes the sport of hockey, with an overarching goal of exposing the sport to new audiences.
As a part of this national celebration, the Flyers will host several community events for fans of all ages:
Flyers Visit Philadelphia VA Medical Center Thursday, February 18, 1:30 p.m. 3900 Woodland Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19104 On Thursday, Flyers Alumni Bob “The Hound” Kelly and Brad Marsh will make a stop at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center in West Philadelphia. The alumni, armed with Flyers gear and giveaways, will go room to room visiting with patients.
Flyers Skate at Dilworth Park Friday, February 19, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Rothman Institute Ice Rink at Dilworth Park To kick off Hockey Weekend Across America, Flyers Alumni Bob Kelly, Brad Marsh, Doug Crossman, and Todd Fedoruk will join the Flyers Ice Girls for a special lunchtime skate at the Rothman Ice Rink in Dilworth Park. Fans are encouraged to don their orange and black and swing by to skate, take photos with the alumni and Ice Girls, and even get their hands on freebies from the Flyers Street Team.
Try Hockey for Free Day Saturday, February 20, various times Flyers Skate Zone Locations This Saturday, the Flyers invite all boys and girls ages four to nine, to attend a FREE hockey clinic at one of the four area Flyers Skate Zone locations. The 60-minute on-ice session will introduce youngsters to the sport and includes free use of equipment and ice skates. Flyers Alumni in Center for Autism’s Fourth Annual Winter Classic Saturday, February 20, 8:15 p.m. Ice Works Skating Complex , 3100 Duttons Mill Rd., Aston, Pa. 19014 An all-Flyers-Alumni team will face off against the Autism Puzzlers in the Center for Autism’s Fourth Annual Winter Classic. The evening’s festivities include a raffle, Chuck-a-Puck contest, autograph signings, and meet and greets. Flyers Cup Selection Sunday Sunday, February 21, 12 p.m. The Brick House – Willow Grove, 2402 Easton Rd., Willow Grove, Pa. 19090 This March, 64 of the best high school hockey teams in the area will compete in the 37th Annual Flyers Cup Scholastic Championships. On Sunday, teams from across eight different leagues will gather at the Brick House as the Eastern Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey Association (“EPIHA”) presents Flyers Cup team selections and seeding live.
Building Hope for Kids Home Reveal Sunday, February 21, 1 p.m. The Flyers Wives, players, and coaches, in partnership with Michael’s Way, will reveal the remodeled home of St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children patient Bisan Abu Ali. Bisan’s house was remodeled as a part of the Wives’ Building Hope for Kids initiative, and annual program that supports a chronically ill child from a family in need by renovating the child’s home. Bisan, this year’s recipient, was diagnosed with progressive optic pathway glioma at six months old is and currently a student at Overbrook School for the Blind.
Flyers NHL Future Goals Assembly Monday, February 22, 2 p.m. Daniel Boone Area Middle School, 1845 Weavertown Rd., Douglassville, Pa 19518 Flyers will host the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders at Daniel Boone Middle School for a specialized assembly as a part of the National Hockey League’s STEM-based Future Goals initiative. Future Goals helps students build their science, technology, engineering, and math skills by using the fast-paced, exciting game of hockey as a learning vehicle.
Flyers Teamwork Assembly Tuesday, February 23, 10 a.m. Wissahickon Charter School, 4700 Wissahickon Ave., Philadelphia, Pa. 19144 The Flyers Community Relations team will host this special school assembly geared toward students grades Kindergarten – fifth. With a special appearance by Flyers Ambassador of Hockey, Bob Kelly, the assembly stresses the importance of using teamwork to achieve your goals at school, while playing sports, and at home.
Jakub Voracek Donates Equipment to Hope Partnership for Education Wednesday, February 24, 2:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Hope Partnership for Education, 2601 N. 11th St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19133 Flyers forward Jakub Voracek will visit Hope Partnership for Education to donate $3,000 worth of street hockey equipment to the school, including nets, helmets, shin pads, goalie equipment, hockey balls, and sticks. Voracek will also host a street hockey clinic for the students to introduce them to the sport. Hope Partnership for Education is an independent middle school in North Philadelphia whose mission is to break the cycle of poverty through education.
Pop-Up Outdoor Hockey with the Flyers Wednesday, February 24, 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Horizon Riverfront Rink Wilmington, 308 Justison Street, Wilmington, DE 19801 In partnership with AAA Mid-Atlantic, the Flyers invite their Delaware fans to suit up and hit the ice for pop-up outdoor hockey for youth players at the Horizon Riverfront Rink in Wilmington, Del. Children ages 12 and under* will have the chance to face-off against legendary Flyers Alumni in this open-to-the-public pick-up hockey game. Fans will also have the chance to win special ticket and autographed merchandise giveaways. *Full equipment required, registration begins on-site at 5 p.m.
