The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 5-10, 175-lb C Travis Konecny to an entry-level contract, according to general manager Ron Hextall.
Konecny, 18 (3/11/1997), was recently selected by the Flyers in the first round (24th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft on June 26. He recorded 29 goals and 39 assists for 68 points in 60 games for the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League this past season.
On the second day of the NHL Entry Draft, Konecny was named as the first recipient of the "E.J. McGuire Award of Excellence" which is presented to the draft-eligible prospect who best exemplifies the commitment to excellence through strength of character, competitiveness and athleticism.
Named captain of the 67’s prior to the 2014-15 season, Konecny has 138 points (55g-83a) in 123 career games for Ottawa, and in his only playoff appearance, recorded 10 points (3g-7a) in five games in 2015.
A native of London, Ontario, Konecny was named OHL Rookie of the Year in 2013-14 after leading all rookies in goals (26) and points (70) in 63 games. His 70 points also led Ottawa and were the most by a 67’s rookie since 1988-89.
