Flyers Sign Randy Jones and Riley Cote

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed defenseman Randy Jones and forward Riley Cote, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. The 6’2”, 200-pound Jones signed a two-year contract, while the 6’2”, 216-pound Cote signed a three-year contract. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.


“We’re very pleased to get both guys signed,” said Holmgren in making the announcement. “Randy is a young player and key component of our defensive core, and can play in any type of situation. Likewise, Riley has developed tremendously over the course of last season and will continue to be an important part of this team moving forward.”

“I think we’ve got a very strong club,” stated Jones. “I think we went out on a high note last year, and with the job that Homer [Paul Holmgren] has done in the last year here has been remarkable. It’s very exciting to be a part of this team.”

“I’m extremely excited,” said Cote. “Obviously, it’s an honor to be part of the Philadelphia Flyers organization for another three years, and after coming off of last season, we’re going to have a great team this upcoming season. I’m just excited to be a part of it.”

Jones, 26, recorded five goals and 26 assists for 31 points and 58 penalty minutes in 71 regular season games for the Flyers this past season. He finished third on the team in plus/minus (+8) and set new career highs for goals, assists, points and games played in a single season. He recorded two assists and four penalty minutes in 16 playoff games as the Flyers reached the Eastern Conference Finals.

In 170 career NHL regular season games over four seasons, Jones has registered nine goals and 52 assists for 61 points and 112 penalty minutes. He was originally signed as a free agent by the Flyers on July 24, 2003.

Cote, 26, recorded a goal and three assists for four points in 70 regular season games, while leading the team with 202 penalty minutes (fourth in the NHL) this past season.

In 78 career NHL regular season games over the past two seasons with the Flyers, Cote has registered four points (1G,3A) and 213 penalty minutes. He was originally signed by the Flyers on August 23, 2005.
