Flyers-Red Wings at John Labatt Centre - Sept. 22

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers
The Philadelphia Flyers will make their annual preseason trek to their “home away from home” and meet the Detroit Red Wings at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario, on Thursday, September 22 at 7 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale on Saturday, May 28 at noon exclusively through johnlabattcentre.com, by phone at 1-866-455-2849 or in person at the John Labatt Centre box office. Fans are invited to a “Motown Block Party” outside the John Labatt Centre commencing at noon, when the NHL Preseason tickets go on sale on Saturday, May 28.

“London truly is our home away from home," said Comcast-Spectacor President and Global Spectrum Chairman Peter Luukko. “The fan support here in London for the Flyers is outstanding. The John Labatt Centre is a fantastic hockey arena that our players enjoy visiting. To be playing the Detroit Red Wings here in London is a dream match-up for hockey fans in Southwestern Ontario and Eastern Michigan. It’s going to be a terrific night of hockey in the City of London.”

London native Jeff Carter takes a ceremonial face off in last year's game vs. Toronto at the JLC.
This marks the first time in eight visits to the John Labatt Centre in London that the Flyers will play the Detroit Red Wings. Previous match-ups have included the Toronto Maple Leafs (twice), Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, Washington Capitals, the Atlanta Thrashers and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

“London is drawing major events and artists on a regular basis and two NHL teams competing on our ice is just one example of the great sports entertainment you now find in London.  When Londoners support these types of events word gets around. People are saying that London is a city where exciting things happen and that’s the kind of reputation we want,” says Mayor Joe Fontana.

This announcement coincides with London’s “Celebrate Detroit Week” which includes performances by Bob Seger on Tuesday, May 24; Kid Rock on Saturday, May 28; and the symbolic renaming of Talbot Street to “Pure Michigan Ave”.

“We are excited to bring the Detroit Red Wings to London and are looking forward to welcoming back the Flyers to the John Labatt Centre,” said Brian Ohl, Global Spectrum Facility Management’s Regional Vice President and General Manager of the John Labatt Centre.  “London has a growing number of Philadelphia Flyer fans and when they face a team with the regional popularity of the Red Wings this fall, people will be in for a great night of hockey.”

Both Global Spectrum Facility Management, operators of the John Labatt Centre, and the Philadelphia Flyers are subsidiaries of internationally known sports and entertainment firm Comcast-Spectacor.
