The Flyers will make their 38th appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and will be facing the Capitals in a playoff series for the fifth time. The teams played each other in the playoffs three times in the span of six seasons from 1984-89 in the first era where the playoffs were divisionally-based, having spent many years as rivals in the old Patrick Division. Then after a 19-year hiatus, the clubs met again in the first round of the 2008 playoffs.
