The Philadelphia Flyers have finalized their opening night roster with the National Hockey League and have also named Wayne Simmonds and Mark Streit as alternate captains, according to general manager Ron Hextall.

Simmonds and Streit will join captain Claude Giroux to form the Flyers’ on-ice leadership trio for the coming season.

“Wearing the 'A' for such a big organization is a huge honor, but it’s also a big responsibility,” said Streit. “Always in my career I wanted to be one of the leaders of a team and lead by example and help whenever I can on and off the ice. I'm excited for the start of the season.”

“It’s my first time being named an assistant captain and it’s an honor. This organization has a great tradition,” said Simmonds. “I’ve tried to work as hard as I’ve possibly could and lead by example out there on the ice. Obviously I think management and the coaches have realized that and have given me this opportunity to have an even bigger role and bigger leader and I welcome that opportunity.”

The Flyers will open the 2014-15 season Wednesday night at Boston with a 22-man roster, as follows (alphabetically by position):

FORWARDS (13): Jason Akeson, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Sean Couturier, Claude Giroux, Blair Jones, Vincent Lecavalier, Michael Raffl, Matt Read, Zac Rinaldo, Brayden Schenn, Wayne Simmonds, R.J. Umberger, Jakub Voracek.

DEFENSEMEN (7): Braydon Coburn, Michael Del Zotto, Nicklas Grossmann, Andrew MacDonald, Luke Schenn, Nick Schultz, Mark Streit.

GOALTENDERS (2): Ray Emery, Steve Mason.

INJURED: Ryan White, Chris Pronger, Kimmo Timonen.

Simmonds enters his fourth season with the Flyers. He’s coming off a season where he played in all 82 games and led the Flyers in goals with 29. Fifteen of those goals came on the power play, which ranked third in the NHL. This is Simmonds’ first leadership appointment in the NHL.

Streit enters his second season with the Flyers. He also appeared in all 82 games last season, while leading all Flyers defensemen in scoring (10-34-44) and finishing third on the team with 34 assists. Streit previously served as the captain of the New York Islanders from 2011-13.
