FIVE THINGS: Maple Leafs vs. Flyers

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers are two points back of the final playoff position as a wild card team with at least two games in hand on each team battling for the final spot… Other than the Flyers, there are four teams outside of playoff position in the Eastern Conference, who are either tied (Ottawa), one point behind (Pittsburgh, New Jersey) or just two points away (Carolina) from being tied for the final wild card spot… Of the six teams that either hold the two wild card positions or are chasing the final wild card in the East (BOS, MTL, PIT, NJ, OTT & CAR), the Flyers have 11 games remaining against those teams… The Maple Leafs are one of three teams in the NHL that the Flyers have yet to face this season (PIT & ARI).

The Flyers come into tonight’s game earning a point in the standings in each of their last six games, going 5-0-1… Since Nov. 23, the Flyers have been one of the NHL’s hottest teams with a 14-6-3 record and posting a .674 winning percentage which is the fifth best in the NHL since that date… At home, the Flyers have earned points in eight straight games, going 6-0-2… Toronto comes into tonight on a five-game losing skid and have been outscored 19 to 6 in that stretch… The Maple Leafs have more wins on the road this season (9) than at home (7), but have dropped their last three road games… Toronto has just five wins against Eastern Conference opponents, but have all five of its wins against the Metropolitan Division.

The Flyers have won four of their last six home meetings against the Maple Leafs, including two straight… The line of Claude Giroux (1g-4a), Jakub Voracek (1g-4a) and Wayne Simmonds (2g-1a) have recorded at least a point in each of their last three games and have a combined 13 points in that stretch… Michael Raffl has four points (1g-3a) in his last five games… Third-year center, Leo Komarov, leads the Maple Leafs in both goals (16) and points (30), while ranking third overall in the NHL in hits (199)… Nazem Kadri has 12 points (3g-9a) in his last 14 games and leads the Leafs with 156 shots on goal… James van Riemsdyk will not play vs. his former team - he is out approximately 6-8 weeks with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot.

Voracek is riding a three-game point streak entering tonight’s game, posting a goal and four assists for five points in that stretch… He ranks second on the team in points (31) and continues to lead all Flyers in assists (26), half of which have come on the power-play (13)… In his last 14 games, Voracek has posted four of his five goals on the year and has 12 assists for 16 points in that span… Voracek’s iron-man streak sits at 269 consecutive games played - he is seven games shy of tying Bobby Clarke at 276 for fourth on the team’s all-time list… Against the Leafs, Voracek has nine assists and 12 points in 14 career games.

The 21-year-old defenseman leads the Maple Leafs blueline in goals (5) and is second with 20 points… He is one of five Maple Leafs and two defensemen on the team to have appeared in all 43 games thus far… He ranks second on the team with over 22 minutes of average ice time per-game (22:11), but leads the squad in even-strength time-on-ice per-game (19:02)… In his third full season in the league, the fifth overall pick leads all defensemen in points (76) and is second in games played (197) from his 2012 draft class… Rielly has three points, all assists, in five career games against the Flyers.
