FIVE THINGS: Lightning vs. Flyers

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers play the last of their season-high six-game homestand tonight and have earned eight out of 10 possible points, going 4-1-0, thus far… During the homestand, the Flyers have recorded 18 goals for an average of 3.6 goals-per-game despite being shut out in one of the contests (4-0 vs. EDM)… Brayden Schenn (3g-4a) leads the Flyers with seven points in the five-game homestand, while Claude Giroux is second with six points (2g-4a)… The Flyers defense has combined for 16 points (3g-13a) during the homestand, led by Mark Streit and Radko Gudas with five each… The Flyers started out the homestand by going 50 percent on the power-play (4-for-8) through the first three games, but have not scored on the man-advantage in their last two (0-for-11).
The Flyers will look to end Tampa’s season high, nine-game winning streak in which they have out-scored their opponent, 33 to 16… The Lightning have gone through their current streak largely scoring even strength goals, posting 26 goals at even strength, three goals on the power play, two penalty shot goals and two empty-netters… They have allowed just three goals on their penalty kill during that span as well (25-for-28)… During the streak, the Lightning are led by Steven Stamkos, who has seven goals and 10 points in nine games, and Ryan Callahan who also has 10 points (4g-6a) in that stretch… Tampa has won 16-consecutive games when scoring three or more goals and own a 29-2-3 record when scoring three or more.
This is the first of a home-and-home series the Flyers will play, with their next game coming at Tampa on Friday, Mar. 11, which is the last time the Flyers will have three days between games for the remainder of the regular season… The Flyers face the Lightning for the first time since their season opening game on Oct. 8 (a span of 152 days), which they dropped 3-2 and included the first 3-on-3 overtime in NHL history… The Flyers have dropped seven of their last eight games against the Lightning, but won their last meeting at the Wells Fargo Center by a score of 7-3 on Jan. 12 last season… Claude Giroux leads the Flyers with 23 points (3g-20a) in 24 career games, while Ryan Callahan leads The Lightning with 30 career points (17g-13a) in 38 career games.
Sam Gagner posted a goal in the Flyers’ 6-0 win vs. Columbus on Saturday giving him four goals in his last seven games… Since returning to the team from the club’s AHL affiliate on Jan. 21, Gagner has four of his six goals and six of his 11 points on the season in his last 17 games… Against the Lightning, Gagner averages nearly an assist per-game with eight helpers in nine career games, but has never scored a goal against Tampa, which is one of three NHL teams he has never recorded a goal against (Flyers & Penguins)… Gagner was briefly traded to the Lightning on June 29, 2014 by Edmonton, but he was traded again that same day to the Arizona Coyotes. The Lightning captain is one of four players on the team to have appeared in all 65 games and leads the squad with 29 goals, 12 power-play goals and tied with six game-winning goals, while ranking second with 52 points… Recently, Stamkos was held scoreless in his last game, but has scored a goal in seven of his last nine games with 10 points (7g-3a) in that span… Against the Flyers, Stamkos has recorded a goal in five games of his last six meetings with the Flyers, but did not score in the last game on Oct. 8… He owns 18 goals and 27 points in 24 career games against Philadelphia.
