FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Oilers

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers play the Oilers in the second of games on back-to-back nights after dropping a 4-1 decision in Vancouver last night… This is the first of four back-to-back series for the Flyers in which both games are played on the road… The Flyers are looking to snap a four-game winless skid in which they have been outscored, 15-6, and have scored one goal in each of the last three games… The Flyers have not scored on the power play in their last five games, going 0-for-12, and have had only two power plays or less in four of the five games… The Oilers have dropped four of their last five games with three of the losses coming on home-ice… Edmonton has recorded a goal on the power play in seven of their last eight games, going 8-for-26, and has scored a power-play goal in eight of 12 games this season… Edmonton also has two of their four wins against Eastern Conference opponents this year.
The Oilers currently have four players who were taken first overall in the NHL draft on their roster - all four players were taken by the Oilers in four of the last six NHL Drafts (2010: Taylor Hall, 2011: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 2012: Nail Yakupov & 2015: Connor McDavid)… All four players are also the top four leading scorers on the Oilers team so far this season as they have combined for 44 points through 12 games, including 15 of the team’s 32 goals so far… In addition to the four players drafted first overall, the Oilers have four additional players (eight total) on their roster who have been drafted in the Top Seven of the NHL Draft (Griffin Reinhart - 4th overall in 2012 ; Darnell Nurse - 7th overall in 2013; Leon Draisaitl - 3rd overall in 2014; Benoit Pouliot - 4th overall in 2005).
This is the 70th all-time meeting between the two clubs - the Flyers own a 32-28-8-1 record against the Oilers… The last time these two teams met a total of nine goals were scored and Nugent-Hopkins scored the game-winning-goal in overtime for a 5-4 Oilers win on Mar. 21… The Flyers defense has recorded a point in six consecutive games, posting eight assists and 11 points in that span… Since his recall from Bakersfield of the AHL, forward Leon Draisaitl has three goals and five points in two games this season… Michal Neuvirth has completed three games from start to finish this season - in that time he is 2-1-0 with a 1.01 goals-against average, a .969 save percentage and two shutouts… Overall this season he has a 1.91 GAA and a .939 save percentage in five appearances.
Gagner has five points (2g-3a) in nine games this year for the Flyers and has a plus-minus rating of +3, which is tied for the team lead, while averaging 13:39 of ice time per-game… Gagner was drafted sixth overall by the Oilers in 2007 and spent the first seven years of his NHL career with Edmonton, where he recorded 295 points in 480 games… Since being traded in 2014, Gagner has faced his former team five times and averages a point per-game against the Oilers with two goals and three assists for five points. The No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft, who is considered to be a generational player, is living up to those expectations early on… He was named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month and leads all rookies in scoring with 12 points (5g-7a) in 12 games… He ranks second on the team in scoring, only behind Taylor Hall’s 13 points… He also recorded a seven-game point streak from Oct. 17-29, where he posted seven assists and 11 points in that stretch… The 18-year-old spent his last season in junior with the OHL’s Erie Otters where he recorded 44 goals and 76 assists for 120 points in just 47 games, while adding 49 points (21g-28a) in just 20 OHL Playoff games.
