FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Kings

The Flyers end their eight-day, three-game California road trip today when they take on the Kings in LA… The Flyers will look to avoid their third straight loss in regulation for the first time since Oct. 29-Nov. 3 when they dropped four straight… They will also look to avoid their fifth straight loss on the road, going 0-3-1, in their last four after winning four straight road games prior to that… This is just the third daytime start for the Flyers so far this season, who are a perfect 2-0-0 in the previous two games… Wayne Simmonds has seven of his nine goals on the road, while Matt Read has eight of his 12 points on the season on the road.

LA enters tonight with a 11-3-1 record in their last 15 games, and lead the Pacific Division and are tied for second in the Western Conference with 50 points… The Kings return home after a four game road trip in which they went a perfect 4-0-0 and outscored their opponents 18-6… In fact, this is just the second home game for the Kings in their last 11 overall - they have played nine of 11 contests on the road since Dec. 8… Since losing three straight games at home to begin the season, the Kings have not lost two consecutive games on home ice… The Kings have scored a power-play goal in each of their last four games, going 5-for-12 on the man advantage… The Kings own a 15-4-1 record when scoring first and have the third-most wins in the NHL when they allow the other team to score first, going 9-7-1.

This is the second and final meeting of the year against the Kings… The Flyers have won four straight games playing in LA, outscoring the Kings 14-7 in the process, with the last LA victory coming nearly seven years ago to this date (Jan. 3, 2009)… The last four Flyers-Kings games have been decided by one goal, as well as six of their last seven… Overall, the Flyers have a .665 winning percentage against the Kings with 85 victories and 189 points in 142 games, its the third highest winning percentage the Flyers have against a franchise (1. Atlanta/Winnipeg: .732, 2. Hartford/Carolina: .680)… The Flyers once owned a 32-game unbeaten streak against the Kings that lasted nearly 10 years (Oct. 22, 1974 through Feb. 13, 1983) in which the team went 27-0-5… Jonathan Quick has a 5-3-1 record against the Flyers, but has posted a 1.87 GAA and .934 save percentage… Claude Giroux averages a point per-game against the Kings with 10 points (3g-7a) in 10 games.

Couturier has points in two straight games (1g-2a) and since being paired with Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds on Dec. 15, he has recorded at least a point in five of six games for three goals and four assists for seven points… Couturier recorded 10 of his 15 points on the season in the month of December, while posting four of his six goals in games when the Flyers win… Couturier has 17 shots on goal, but just two assists in six career games against the Kings.

In his fourth season in the NHL, Toffoli is the Kings leading scorer this year with 18 goals and 30 points through 37 games… His 18 goals are five shy of matching his career high of 23 set just last season… He comes into tonight riding a five-game point streak in which he has recorded six goals and eight points in that stretch… He also leads the Kings with a plus-minus rating of plus-22, which also ranks second overall in the NHL… Toffoli has one goal and three points in five career meetings against the Flyers.
