FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Islanders

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers
The Flyers have had four of their last five games decided past regulation play, going 2-2, in that span, and have had a league-high nine out of 21 games decided past regulation play (tied with Ottawa)… Of the nine games, seven have been decided in the 3 on 3 overtime, which is also an NHL high… The Islanders have played four games past regulation play, going 1-3, and have had nine games decided by one goal, going 3-3-3, but have not had an overtime or shootout in their last 10 games… Four of the last five meetings between the Flyers and Islanders have been decided by one goal, including three of those going past regulation.
This is the first of five meetings and three contests in Brooklyn for the Flyers, who will play the Islanders at Barclays Center the most of any other team this season… This is the first regular season game against the Islanders in Brooklyn, but the two teams did play a preseason game this year, with the Islanders earning a 3-2 win over the Flyers… The Flyers have eight players on their current roster who appeared in that game, including both goal scorers (Brayden Schenn & Taylor Leier)… The Islanders have a 6-4-2 record at Barclays this year… The Flyers won the last meeting against the Islanders, but have lost three straight games on Long Island… Claude Giroux has the most assists (26) and points (37) against the Islanders than any other team in his career in 33 games played, while Matt Read has the most goals (10) and points (15) against the Islanders than any other team in his career in 18 games played.
The Flyers have earned points in the standings in four of their last five games and six of their last nine games played entering tonight… The Islanders come in having lost two straight games and have dropped eight of their last 12 games, going 4-6-2, after starting the season with a 6-2-1 record… The Flyers have had three of their last five goals come on the power play, while their penalty kill has stopped each of the last 12 times shorthanded over the last three games and their last 13 in total… Over the last six games, the Islanders line of John Tavares (5g-3a), Kyle Okposo (7a) and Brock Nelson (5g-3a) have accounted for 23 points (10g-13a)… Okposo currently has a five-game point/assist streak with his seven helpers… The Flyers have posted more than 30 shots on goal in each of their last four games, averaging 36 shots on goal in that stretch.
Gostisbehere posted the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Flyers snap a three-game winless skid… It was his second goal and third point in his first five games of the season, and he has recorded a point in each game in which the Flyers have not been shut out… His two goals are tied for second and three points are tied for third among Flyers defensemen in just five games played… Since being recalled on Nov. 14, he has averaged 18:05 of ice time through five games, over three minutes of which have been on the power-play (3:17). Tavares leads the Islanders in goals (10) and points (19) through 18 games… He is currently riding a three-game point streak in which he has three goals and five points, and has five goals and eight points in his last six games… The No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NHL draft leads all players from his draft class in games played (450), goals (184), assists (236) and points (420)… Against the Flyers, Tavares led the Islanders with five points (2g-3a) in the five-game season series last year and has 14 career goals and 26 points in 30 career games against Philadelphia.
