FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Hurricanes

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers
This is the fourth and final meeting of the season against Carolina with the Flyers owning a perfect 3-0-0 record… All three games have been decided past regulation play and in overtime… Shayne Gostisbehere recorded two of the three overtime winners, while Jakub Voracek posted the other, which was his first goal of the 2015-16 season… Voracek leads all players in the season series with seven points in the three games, while Gostisbehere has four points in the three games… The Flyers have scored six of their 10 goals in the second period and their three overtime goals on just four shots in the season series.
A win in regulation and the Flyers (63 pts), would leapfrog the Hurricanes (64 pts), in the chase for the final wildcard spot, currently held by the Penguins at 68 points… Combined with a Devils (65 pts) loss in regulation tonight vs. Rangers, the Flyers could  move into a tie with New Jersey and three points back of the Penguins… The Flyers have earned at least a point in nine of their last 12 contests, going 6-3-3… The Hurricanes have earned points in six of their last eight games (4-2-2) and are 11-5-3 in their last 19 games… Coming off a loss to Tampa Bay in their last outing, the Hurricanes have not lost back-to-back games in regulation since they lost three straight in regulation from Nov. 27-Dec. 3.
Tonight ends a five-game road trip for the Flyers, who are 2-1-1 thus far, and paves the way for a season-long six-game homestand after tonight’s game… Shayne Gostisbehere’s point streak sits at 15 straight games in which he has 18 points (5g-13a) - it’s the NHL’s longest active streak, longest rookie and defenseman streak all season and second only to Patrick Kane’s 26-game streak this year… A point tonight would make him one of four Flyers in franchise history to have points in 16 straight games (Bob Clarke (2), Eric Lindros & Brian Propp)…  Hurricanes forward Jordan Staal has a five-game point streak with seven points (3g-4a), while Joakim Nordstrom (2g-1a) and Victor Rask (3a) each have three-game point streaks… The Hurricanes have 22 of their 27 victories when scoring the first goal (22-5-6)… The Flyers average the most penalty minutes per-game (13.1) in the NHL, while the Hurricanes average the least penalty minutes (6.6) per-game in the NHL.
Schenn had a goal and an assist the Flyers 5-4 OT win in Toronto and now has four goals and seven points in his last six games… Schenn is second on the Flyers in scoring since Jan. 1, recording 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points in 22 games during that stretch, while also leading the entire team with a plus-minus rating of +7… In the season series with Carolina, Schenn has two goals in two games, while recording 11 points (4g-7a) in 15 career games against the Hurricanes. Skinner has points in two straight games (2g-1a) and has 10 points (4g-6a) in his last 11 games… He leads the Hurricanes in goals (21) which is six more than the next closest player, and ranks third in points (35) on the Hurricanes… He is one of six players who have played in all 60 games for Carolina… Skinner also has three goals in his three games against the Flyers this season… In his career against the Flyers, the former seventh overall pick in 2010 has 10 goals and 16 points in 20 games.
