FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Hurricanes

The Flyers enter tonight’s game looking to end a two-game skid… They have earned points in their last two road games, going 1-0-1, and have a 2-4-2 record away from home… The Flyers have all five of their wins when scoring the game’s first goal (5-2-0)… Three of the last five Flyers goals have been scored on the power play and the Flyers are 3-for-10 (33.3 percent) in the last three games on the man advantage… The Flyers are ranked second in the NHL in hits (503), led by Radko Gudas, who has 68 hits and is tied for third among all NHL players - Gudas has had five or more hits in nine of his 13 games.
The Hurricanes play the second of a five-game homestand tonight and have just two of their six wins on home ice, going 2-4-1… Carolina has dropped two straight games and four of their last five… They are tied for first in the NHL in average shots on goal per-game at 31.5, while the Flyers rank second in the NHL for most shots against per-game at 34.1… Eric Staal has points in four of his last five games (1g-3a) and is tied for the team lead in scoring with 10 points (4g-6a) in 16 games… Rookie defenseman Noah Hanifin was taken fifth overall in last year’s NHL draft - he is one of only five players (and the only defenseman) to have played an NHL game from his draft class… The Hurricanes have the 10th best power play on home ice, going 5-for-22 (22.7 percent) and fifth best penalty kill in the NHL at home at 85.7 percent (12-for-14).
The Flyers and Hurricanes meet for the first of four times this season, last year they met a total of five times with the Flyers going 1-3-1 and dropping all three games in Raleigh (0-2-1)…  The Flyers are 1-5-3 in their last nine games against Carolina, but prior to that, owned an impressive record of 23-4-4 in a 31-game span, which included an 18-game streak in which they were unbeaten in regulation from Dec. 31, 2006 to Feb. 10, 2011, going 15-0-3… The Staal brothers combined for five goals and 11 points in the season series last year with Eric recording five points (2g-3a) and Jordan leading the Hurricanes with six points (3g-3a) in four games… Sean Couturier led the Flyers in the season series last year with three goals and four points in five games… Scott Laughton has two points (1g-1a) in two career games against Carolina and scored his first NHL goal against the Hurricanes last season.
Giroux leads the team in points (10) and is tied in goals (5)… He has recorded a point in three of his last four games and has gone just once this season where he has failed to record a point in two straight games (Oct. 29-30)… Giroux also has seven of his 10 points on the road in eight games (3g-4a)… Giroux is tied for third in the NHL in face-offs taken this season (395) and leads all NHL players with 235 faceoffs won… Against the Hurricanes, Giroux has 16 assists and 22 points in 24 career games, including three assists in last year’s season series. The 23-year-old defenseman leads the team in goals (6), which also leads all NHL defensemen… All six of his goals have come on the power play, which leads all NHL players… Faulk is tied for the team lead in scoring with 10 points through 16 games - he is one of six players on five teams who lead, or are either tied for the lead, in points on their team (MTL: Subban, MIN: Suter, OTT: Karlsson, TOR: Rielly & Phaneuf)… Against the Flyers, Faulk had three points (1g-2a) in the season series last year, was a +3 and led all players between the two clubs in average ice-time at 24:06… He has eight points (2g-6a) in 14 career games against the Flyers.
