FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Edmonton Oilers

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers return home for a four-game homestand in which they will play the first three games in a five-day span, and take a five-day break before playing their fourth on Friday, Nov. 14… The Flyers are 2-1-2 at home, but have won their last two games and earned a point in the standings in each of their last four games at the Wells Fargo Center… The Flyers have scored six of their 17 goals at home on the power-play, ranking seventh in the NHL in the man-advantage on home ice (6-for-21, 28.6%) BUT are more impressive on the penalty kill on home ice - They have killed off all 13 penalties at home so far and are one of only two teams (Detroit) that has not allowed a power-play goal at home yet this season… Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek and Wayne Simmonds lead the Flyers with seven points at home this year - Simmonds has five of his six goals AND seven of his nine points at home.

The Oilers come into tonight with an up and down season thus far… After dropping their first five games of the season, they earned four straight victories, but have now lost their last two games… All four of their victories have come against opponents from the Eastern Conference and have come on home ice… The Oilers have played eight of their 11 games at home this season and remain winless on the road (0-2-1)… Oilers leading scorer, Taylor Hall (6g-4a—10pts) will not play tonight due to an MCL sprain in which he will miss 2-4 weeks… Oilers captain, (D) Andrew Ference will not play tonight due to a three-game suspension by the NHL for an illegal check to the head.

The Flyers went a perfect 2-0-0 in the season series against the Oilers last year… This is the first time the Oilers have visited Philadelphia in consecutive calendar years since 2000-01 and 2001-02… Flyers GM Ron Hextall made his NHL debut against the Edmonton Oilers in Philadelphia on Oct. 9, 1986… The Flyers have allowed the first goal to their opponent in nine of their 11 games this season… Seven of the Flyers’ 11 games have been decided by one goal… The Flyers are 3-0-1 when leading after the first period… The Flyers have scored 15 goals in the third period compared to just 16 total goals in the first and second period… Leon Draisaitl is the first first round draft pick from this past draft in Philadelphia to return and play in the city he was drafted in… Oilers recalled defensemen Keith Aulie and Oscar Klefbom from their AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons.

Voracek continues to be the hottest player for the Orange & Black… Consider the numbers: five-game point streak in which he has a goal and eight assists for nine points including four multi-point games; he has posted a point in every Flyers game this season except one (10 of 11 - the Flyers’ shutout loss at Chicago); He leads the Flyers in scoring with 16 points (3g-13a); His 13 helpers are tied for the NHL lead and 16 points rank second overall in the NHL to Penguins’ Sidney Crosby… Voracek leads all players in the NHL in even-strength points (13).

With an injury to Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins takes center stage as the top-line center for the Oilers… He is third on the team in scoring with six points (3g-3a) but has five of those six points in the last six games, including a five-game point streak that was snapped in their last contest… The 2011 first overall draft pick has only appeared in two games against the Flyers, scoring a goal the last time these two teams met in December of 2013… In his fourth NHL season, he has posted 138 points (44g-94a) in 191 games.
