FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Devils

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers face the Devils for the second time in four days, after dropping a 2-1 overtime decision on Saturday afternoon… This is the final meeting of the year against the Devils with the road team winning each game… Two of the three have been decided in overtime… Over 50 percent of the goals in the series have come on the power play (8-of-15) with the Flyers recording 3-of-6, and the Devils scoring 5-of-9 on the man advantage… The Flyers are looking to go perfect on the road against the Devils for the second time in the last 20 years, with the only other time coming two years ago in 2013-14… Kyle Palmieri leads all players in the season series with five points (2g-3a), while Claude Giroux has three points (1g-2a) against the Devils in the series.

The Flyers look to snap a two-game winless skid and are six points back of the final wild card position in the East… The Flyers have recorded a goal on the power play in three of their last four games and 11 of their last 14 games (14-for-61, 22.9%)… The Devils, at 65 points, currently occupy one of the two wild card positions in the East… They are on a three-game winning streak in which they have scored every goal on the power-play going 50 percent (5-for-10)… They have had their last seven games decided by one goal, including their last six games which saw no more than four goals combined in each contest… New Jersey has earned points in their last six games playing on home ice, going 5-0-1 at the Prudential Center.
Shayne Gostisbehere currently has an active league high 12-game point streak in which he has three goals and 12 assists for 15 points… Its the longest streak by a rookie and a defenseman in the NHL this season, and a point in tonight’s game would give him the second longest overall streak in the NHL this season, only behind Patrick Kane’s 26-game streak… The line of Wayne Simmonds (10g—4a), Claude Giroux (4g—12a) and Jakub Voracek (4g-14a) has combined for 48 points in their last 15 games… Should they get the start tonight, Cory Schneider would be looking for his 26th win of the season, which would tie his career-high, set just last season - Schneider leads the NHL in GAA (1.98)… Michal Neuvirth has a career mark of 5-2-5 with a 2.02 GAA and .927 save percentage in 11 career games vs. New Jersey - he ranks second in the NHL in save-percentage (.932) and sixth in goals-against average (2.13).
The Flyers captain continues to lead the team in scoring with 46 points (16g-30a) in 55 games - he is one of five Flyers to have appeared in all 55 games so far this year… Giroux is coming off of playing a season high 26 minutes of ice time in his last game and has logged over 22 minutes of TOI in five of his last six games… Giroux ranks fourth among all NHL forwards in average TOI (20:51)… He also has 11 of his 16 goals on the road this year… In the last meeting, Giroux set up Gostisbehere for the only Flyers goal… He has 22 assists and 31 points in 34 career games against the Devils. Travis Zajac has points in two straight games for the Devils with two assists… He now has five points (1g-4a) in his last six games… He leads all Devils forwards in time-on-ice per-game with over 20 minutes (20:02) which is also third overall on the team… He is fifth on the squad in scoring with 28 points (8g-20a), but missed eight games due to injury this season… Zajac is one of 20 players in the NHL who played under Flyers head coach Dave Hakstol at the University of North Dakota… He has two goals and an assist in the season series, while amassing 32 points (12g-20a) in 47 career games against the Flyers.
