FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Detroit Red Wings

The Flyers have earned points in four of their last five games, going 2-1-2… They return home after a three-game, six-day road trip in which they went 2-1-0 and are looking for their first win on home ice… Detroit comes in winners of three of their last four games… Six of Detroit’s seven games this year have been decided by one goal, four of which have come past regulation play, including their last three games… The Flyers went 2-1-0 in the three-game season series against Detroit last year, scoring 13 goals in the series and winning the only meeting in Philadelphia by a 5-0 shut out… The Flyers scored seven of their 13 goals against the Red Wings in the third period last season… Eight of the 21 combined goals (38%) scored in the season series came on the power play… All-time, the Flyers have a 40-16-11 record at home against the Wings and an overall mark of 58-44-30 in 132 games.




The Red Wings have not allowed a goal on the power play through their first seven games, killing off all 21 times shorthanded, which leads the NHL… The Flyers have not allowed a goal on the penalty kill on home ice this season, killing off all eight opportunities from their opponent… On the power play, the Red Wings have not scored, going 0-for-16, in their last four games, and have not capitalized on their last 17 opportunities in their last five games… The Flyers have the fifth-best power-play in the NHL (26.9%) and third-best on home ice, going 5-for-14 (35.7%)… Claude Giroux has seven of his nine points on the power play for the Flyers.



The Flyers have allowed the first goal of the game in six of their first seven games this season… Pavel Datsyuk has 12 points (6g-6a) in nine career games against the Flyers… Steve Mason has appeared in 22 games against the Red Wings in his career, going 10-10-2, while Ray Emery has appeared just five times, going 3-1-0 against Detroit… RJ Umberger has the most goals against the Red Wings than any other player on the Flyers current roster, scoring 12 times in 33 games… Including the injury status of Chris Pronger and Kimmo Timonen, the Flyers have 31 man-games lost due to injury through the first seven games of the season… Due to the injuries to Braydon Coburn and Andrew MacDonald, the Flyers have recalled 21-year-old defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere from the Phantoms, who could make his NHL debut tonight… Gostisbehere has the second-longest surname in Flyers history at 12 letters, only John Vanbiesbrouck has more with 13 letters - the shortest, in case you were wondering, Jon Sim & Kirby Law.

 




Couturier is off to the best start of his four-year NHL career with five points (2g-3a) in seven games… He has posted four of those points over the last three games, including a goal and an assist in the Flyers’ 5-3 win at Pittsburgh on Wednesday… Couturier is tied for the team lead (with Luke Schenn) for most shorthanded time on ice per-game (2:08)… Couturier recorded his first and only four-point game of his career when the Flyers defeated the Red Wings last season, 6-3 at Detroit, with two goals and two assists… In the three-game season series, Couturier had five points (3g-2a) and a plus-4 rating.

The Red Wings captain leads the team in scoring through their first seven games with three goals and 10 points, while recording a plus-3 rating… All 10 of his points have come at even strength and nine of his 10 points have come in his last four games, which has also included a three-game goal-scoring streak… Zetterberg only appeared in one of the three games against the Flyers last season, but posted two goals and an assist in the contest… In his career, he averages nearly a goal per-game with nine goals and 16 points in 10 games against the Flyers.
