FIVE THINGS: Flyers vs. Dallas Stars

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

The Stars and Flyers are both in a fight for the playoffs and important playoff positioning… With 79 points, the Flyers sit in second place in the Metropolitan Division, but are just three points ahead of fifth-place Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets, both of whom play tonight… The Stars, with 75 points, sit just outside the playoff picture, two points behind Phoenix for the final Wild Card, but have one game in hand on the Coyotes, who also play tonight… Dallas comes into tonight having dropped three straight games, but have earned at least a point in 14-of-19 games since Jan. 21, going 11-5-3 in that span… The Flyers play the second of their four-game homestand and are riding a three-game winning streak… They have gone 10-2-1 since Feb. 1 with four of their last five games decided by one goal.

Tonight marks the first time the Flyers will have hosted the Dallas Stars in over three years, since a 3-1 victory on Feb. 5, 2011… The Flyers currently own a three-game winning streak on home-ice against the Stars, with their last loss coming on Dec. 1, 2007 with Martin Biron in net… The Flyers dropped their only meeting this season, 5-1, at Dallas on Dec. 7, which snapped a six-game winning streak over the Stars dating back to 2008-09… Since the team moved to Dallas, from being the Minnesota North Stars in 1993-94, the Flyers own more ties against the Stars on home ice than wins or losses, going 5-2-6 at Philadelphia and a 9-8-9 record overall against Dallas.

The Flyers and Stars average the same exact amount of goals-per-game AND goals-against per-game this season (2.8) heading into tonight… The Flyers have been perfect on the penalty kill in their last five games, killing off all 18 power-play opportunities by their opponent… The Stars have allowed 30 or more shots in their last six contests, while the Flyers have allowed less than 30 shots in their last four games and six of their last seven… Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen has never won against the Flyers in 12 appearances - he holds a 0-10-2 career record with a 3.50 goals-against average and a .891 save percentage, while newly acquired Stars goaltender Tim Thomas has a career record of 14-4-2 with a 2.21 GAA and a .934 sv pct. in 20 career appearances against the Flyers... Flyers defenseman Andrew MacDonald continues to lead the NHL in blocked shots (213) and is still the only defenseman with over 200 blocked shots this season..

Giroux sits in fourth place in the scoring race with 71 points, three points behind Getzlaf & Kessel who are tied for 2nd place with 74 points… Giroux leads the Flyers in goals (24), game-winning goals (5), assists (47) and points on the power play (30)… The Flyers captain has points in four straight games, including three straight multi-point games to record seven points (1g-6a) in the four-game span… Since the beginning of February, Giroux has only gone two games without finding the scoresheet (Feb. 27 - SJ & Mar. 8 - TOR), recording points in 11 of 13 games in that span… Against the Stars, Giroux was held scoreless in the first meeting, but still averages a point per-game against Dallas in his career, posting six points (2g-4a) in six games. If there's another player that has shot up the leaderboard in scoring it's Tyler Seguin… The Stars sniper is right behind Giroux, sitting in fifth place in the NHL in scoring race with 70 points (31g-39a) and is one of five players in the NHL with at least 30 goals and 30 assists… Seguin is currently riding a six-game point streak in which he averages two points per-game with six goals and six assists for 12 points… In their only meeting this season Seguin recorded a four-point night, including a hat trick... Overall in his career, he has eight goals and 12 points in 11 games against the Flyers.
