FIVE THINGS: Flyers at Tampa Bay Lightning

by Staff Writer / Philadelphia Flyers

The Flyers come into tonight riding a three-game win streak and are winners of four of their last five… They have also recorded a point in the standings in six of their last seven games to move within two points of the Metropolitan Division lead… Their three-game win streak is currently the longest in the NHL… During their streak, the Flyers have out-scored their opponent, 12-7… The Lightning have won three of their last four games and are in second place in the Atlantic Division, three points behind last year’s playoff opponent, the Montreal Canadiens… Tampa Bay is tied (NY Islanders) for the most goals in the NHL so far this season (34) and rank fourth in the NHL in goals per game at 3.40.

This is the first of three meetings on the year against the Lightning and only meeting in Tampa… The Flyers haven’t had much success against the Lightning lately - they went 0-3-0 in the season series last year and are 3-10-1 in the last four years… AT TAMPA, they have had even less success - they are currently on a six game winless streak, going 0-5-1, with their last victory coming in a 4-3 shootout on Feb. 15, 2011 when Brian Boucher backstopped the team to a win and Kimmo Timonen scored the game-winning shootout goal… Tonight is just the second game of the season against a Metropolitan Division opponent for Tampa, losing their only other meeting (2-1 vs. NJ), while the Flyers take on their third Atlantic Division opponent, going 1-1-1 so far.

Claude Giroux (21:34) and Steven Stamkos (21:03) rank first and second among all NHL forwards in average ice-time per game and are the only forwards averaging over 21 minutes per game… Jakub Voracek leads the Flyers and is tied for third in the NHL with 13 points (2g-11a) in nine games - he has recorded a point in all but one game (at Chicago, Oct. 21) this season… Voracek’s 11 assists are tied for the NHL lead, with Lightning forward Tyler Johnson, who leads the Lightning with 12 points in 10 games… Johnson is riding a seven-game point streak which included four-assists in his last outing, a 7-3 win over Arizona… Ray Emery has all four wins for the Flyers this season, going 4-0-1 with a 2.44 GAA and .924 save percentage… Lightning goalie Ben Bishop is 5-1-1 this season with a 2.31 GAA and .913 save percentage - Last season he was a Vezina Trophy finalist and set records for most wins (37), save percentage (.924) and goals-against average (2.23) in Tampa history… The Flyers have earned three of their four victories this season when out-shooting their opponent - they are tied for third overall in the NHL (Vancouver) in shots per-game (32.8).

Giroux is averaging an assist per-game with nine helpers and 11 points through the club’s first nine games of the season… He leads the team, and is tied for the overall NHL lead in shots on goal (43)… He comes into tonight with a three-game point streak, posting four assists, and has recorded a point in seven of his last eight games… Giroux led the Flyers against Tampa last year, posting four points, all assists, in the three-game season series… All-time, Giroux has 18 points, 15 of them assists, in 20 games against the Lightning.

Stamkos leads the Lightning with six goals through 10 games and ranks third in the NHL for most shots on goal (41)… The former #1 overall pick (2008) has averaged over a point per-game pace in his career with 435 points (239g-196a) in 420 games AND since the beginning of the 2009-10 season, no player in the NHL has scored more goals than Stamkos' 216 (Alex Ovechkin is the next closest at 208)… Stamkos only played in one game of the season series last year against the Flyers, but recorded a goal and an assist… He has 14 career goals and 22 points in 20 games to go along with a plus-11 rating against the Flyers.
