FIVE THINGS: Flyers at Pittsburgh Penguins

The Flyers face the Penguins for the first time this season, and won’t face them again until Jan. 20 (a span of 90 days)… Last season, the Flyers went a perfect 3-0-0 at Pittsburgh with all three victories coming by one-goal margins… In fact, they are unbeaten in regulation in the last two years, going 4-0-2, and have a 9-1-2 mark at the CONSOL Energy Center since it opened in 2010-11… Last season, the Flyers killed off 20 of 21 power-play attempts (95.2%) from the Penguins and had a 40% success rate on their own power play, going 6-for-15… The Flyers scored 13 of their 14 goals in the first (7) and second (6) period last season against the Penguins… Overall, the Flyers have a 57-44-30-0 record in 131 games against the Penguins, but a losing mark of 18-28-19-0 in Pittsburgh.

Jakub Voracek averages a point-per game in his career against the Pens, posting 10 goals and 10 assists for 20 points in 20 games… Marc-Andre Fleury has played 47 games against the Flyers in his career (24-15-0-2), while back-up goaltender Thomas Greiss has played just twice against the Flyers (2-0-0)… Evgeni Malkin averages 1.34 points per game in his career against the Flyers with 58 points (22g-36a) in 43 games… Both Crosby and Malkin who average over a point per-game against the Flyers in their career, had less than a point per game in last year’s season series… Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn and Matt Read led the team with three goals in last year’s season series - All three of Simmonds’ goals came on the power play, while two of Matt Read’s three goals came shorthanded… Simmonds also has eight goals and 16 points in 18 career games against Pittsburgh.

This is the second of games on back-to-back nights for the Flyers, who dropped a 4-0 contest in Chicago last night, while the Penguins have had a full three days off from their last game on Oct. 18… This is the second of 14 sets of back-to-back series for the Flyers this season - they are 0-2-0 in the first and 0-1-0 in the second game… Tonight marks the end of a three-game home stand for the Penguins and the end of a three-game road trip for the Flyers… Despite going 0-for-2 last night, the Flyers have the league’s fourth-best power play going 7-for-24 (29.2%)… The Penguins have the NHL’s best power-play at 47.1% (8-for-17)… Sidney Crosby’s new linemate, Patric Honqvist has eight points (4g-4a) through four games… Hornqvist was acquired in the summer in a trade for James Neal… The Flyers face the Penguins for the first time since a shift in management over the summer - Jim Rutherford, formerly of the Carolina Hurricanes, took over as general manager, while Mike Johnston, formerly of the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks, took over as head coach.


Giroux’s four-game point streak came to an end last night in Chicago, but he continues to lead the team with seven points (2g-5a - tied with Voracek & Simmonds)… Both of his goals have come on the power play and five of his seven points have come on the man-advantage… Giroux also leads the team with 30 shots on goal through the first six games, which ranks second overall in the NHL behind only Steven Stamkos (33)… He ranks third on the team, and leads all forwards, in ice-time per game on the season, averaging over 21 minutes of TOI (21:18)… Against the Penguins, he recorded seven assists and eight points in the five-game season series last season… Overall in his career, Giroux averages a point per game, posting 28 points (10g-18a) in 28 contests.

The 2013-14 Hart Trophy winner is averaging over two points per game with nine points (4g-5a) through the team’s first four games… Three of his four goals, and six of his nine points have come on the power play… He is the first Penguin to post three or more points in each of their first two games since Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Ron Francis did it in 1995-96… Crosby recorded his 500th career assist in his last game, becoming sixth fastest player in NHL history to reach 500 assists (554 games)… Against the Flyers, Crosby averages 1.56 points per game in his career, posting 75 points (30g-45a) in 48 games… Last season he recorded four points (2g-2a) in five games.
