FIVE THINGS: Flyers at Detroit Red Wings

The Flyers enter tonight trying to snap a five-game losing skid on the road… This is the second game in a series in which they have seven of eight games on the road from Nov. 24 -Dec. 9… The Red Wings have won three of their last four, and four of their last six games… Detroit owns a 7-2-2 record in 11 home games and are 4-1-1 against the Metropolitan Division… Despite being shut out last game and firing only 21 shots, the Flyers continue to rank in the Top 10 in the NHL in goals per-game (T-9th, 2.85) and shots per-game (7th, 31.2)… The Flyers are unbeaten in regulation when scoring the first goal, going 5-0-1, but have not scored the first goal in any of their nine road games… The Flyers are also 7-0-1 when holding a lead after the first period… Nine of Detroit’s 11 victories have come when they out-shoot their opponent, going 9-3-1.



This is the second of three meetings and only meeting in Detroit… The Flyers won the first meeting, a 4-2 win in which they scored three third-period goals for the come from behind victory in Philadelphia… While the Flyers have a dominant record over Detroit at home, same can be said about the Red Wings over the Flyers on their home ice - The Flyers own a 41-16-11 record in Philly, but an 18-28-19 mark in Detroit… The Flyers have lost nine of their last 11 games when playing in Joe Louis Arena, but the two victories have come in their last four meetings, including the last game - 6-3 on Dec. 4, 2013… Steve Mason has faced the Red Wings 22 times, more than any other team in his career, going 10-10-2 with a 2.71 GAA and .921 save percentage… Defenseman Mark Streit averages over a point per-game with nine assists and 10 points in nine career outings against Detroit… Henrik Zetterberg has nine goals and 16 points in just 11 career games against the Flyers, while Pavel Datsyuk has seven goals and 13 points in 10 games against the Flyers.



The Flyers have the NHL’s seventh-best overall power-play at 22.9 percent, going 16-for-70… The Red Wings have the NHL’s third-best penalty kill on home ice, allowing just three goals on 40 opportunities - they are also the third-least penalized team overall, averaging 8.6 PIMs per-game… Detroit has scored just 14 goals in the first period this season, but has also allowed the second fewest goals in the opening period of any NHL team (10)… The Flyers have allowed the fourth-fewest goals in the second period (15)… Since his recall to the Flyers, Scott Laughton averaged 8:56 of ice-time in his first two games, but has jumped to an average of 14:40 in his last two games… The Flyers have not scored a goal on the road in a span of 139:22 - Matt Read’s third period goal at Montreal (Nov. 15)… Defenseman Nick Schultz will play in his 900th career NHL game tonight… Carlo Colaiacovo played six regular season and nine playoff games for Detroit in 2012-13.




The Flyers captain has 11 points (4g-7a) in 10 games in the month of November, posting a point in seven of those 10 contests… Giroux is tied for fifth in the NHL’s scoring race with 24 points and is tied for third with 18 assists… All six of Giroux’s goal have come on the power-play… Giroux continues to the lead all NHL forwards in average ice-time per game (21:53) and has recorded 22 minutes or more in five straight games, including 23 minutes or more in three of those games… He is tied for the NHL lead with 93 shots (WSH - Ovechkin)… Against the Red Wings, Giroux averages over a point per-game with 10 point (4g-6a) in nine contests.


Tatar has been the hottest Red Wings player recently, recording a six-game point streak in which he has five goals and three assists for eight points… He is second on the team with nine goals on the season thus far and has eight of his nine goals, and 12 of his 13 points, in his last 12 games… Tatar won the 2013 Calder Cup in the AHL with the Red Wings’ AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids, including the Playoff MVP after posting 16 goals and 21 points in 24 games… He’s appeared in four career games against the Flyers, posting two goals in that span.
