FIVE THINGS: Flyers at Colorado Avalanche

A s 2014 closes out, the Flyers will look for their 37th win of the Calendar year, posting a record of 36-30-12 from Jan. 1 - Dec. 30… In that calendar year, the Flyers scored 231 goals in 78 games, averaging 2.96 goals per-game, including 56 power-play goals in that span… Flyers captain Claude Giroux leads all NHL players in points with 91 and assists with 62… Jakub Voracek is tied for 1st in NHL (Seguin & Tarasenko) in points per 60 minutes (3.50)… Of the 17 New Year’s Eve games in Flyers history, the club owns an all-time record of 9-5-2-1 and an impressive 7-1-1-1 mark in their last 10 games on Dec. 31… This is the 12th time that the Avalanche will play on New Year's Eve, with the Avs posting a 6-4-1 mark in the previous 11.



B oth teams come into tonight’s game having lost two straight games… It is the second and final meeting of the year with the Flyers earning a 4-3 victory on Nov. 8… In that win, the Flyers scored three of their four goals on the power play with Claude Giroux (2g-1a) and Jakub Voracek (3a) each recording three-point nights… Former Flyer Max Talbot posted a goal and an assist for the Avs, who scored all three goals in the third period… The Flyers haven’t had much success in Denver - they have dropped their last six games, going 0-4-2, over the last 11 years with their last win coming by way of a 2-1 OT victory on Dec. 27, 2002… Claude Giroux has four goals and five points in five career games against the Avalanche, while former Flyer Danny Briere averages a point-per-game against Philadelphia with 18 points (9g-9a) in 18 games.



T he Avs have eight players who have recorded 20 or more points so far this season - the most of any team… Tonight, the Flyers will play their 11th game on the road in their last 15 contests and eighth game against an opponent from the Western Conference… Sean Couturier has five points in his last five games (2g-3a), while linemate RJ Umberger has four points (3g-1a) in his last five… Defenseman Erik Johnson has a goal in each of the last four games, the first Avalanche defenseman to score in four consecutive games since Sandis Ozolinsh from Nov 13-20, 1996… No Colorado defender has scored in five straight since the team moved from Quebec… Alex Tanguay leads the team in scoring with 24 points, he will play in his 500th career game as a member of the Avalanche tonight.




Streit comes into tonight’s game having recorded an assist in four of his last five games and nine of his last 12 contests for a total of 10 helpers in that span… Streit leads the team’s defense in scoring with 23 points (4g-19a) which is nearly triple the amount of points the next defenseman on the team (Grossmann, Del Zotto & Schultz, 8pts)… His 23 points are also tied for 10th overall in the NHL among defensemen… Against Colorado, Streit has six points (1g-5a) in eight career games.


The 37-year-old in his 18th NHL season and ranks second on the team in scoring with 23 points, 20 of which have come at even strength play… Lately he has been held scoreless in three of his last four games, but the Avs own a 5-1-0 record when Iginla scores a goal… Iginla is second among active NHL players with 568 goals which also ranks 21st all-time in the NHL… Overall he has 1,190 points in the NHL which is 47st all-time… Tonight will be his 1,347th NHL game which ties Mats Sundin for 48th all-time… Against the Flyers, Iginla averages nearly a point-per-game with 20 points (9g-11a) in 21 career games
