FIVE THINGS: Capitals vs. Flyers

The Flyers get back to playing in the Eastern Conference after five straight games against the West - Their last game against the East was on Oct. 30 vs. Buffalo… This is also just the third game against a division opponent all season - the Flyers are 1-1-0 against the Metropolitan Division… The Flyers have three of their five wins, and eight of their 13 points, against the Eastern Conference, going 3-3-2… Washington comes into tonight having won four of their last six games… The Caps dropped their last game, a 1-0 loss at Detroit, and are one of two teams in the NHL that have not lost two straight games in any fashion so far this season (Dallas).
This is the first of four meetings on the year against the Capitals… The Flyers have won two straight over the Caps and four of their last five games… They have also won four straight on home ice against Washington with their last loss at home coming two years ago in a 7-0 shutout loss on Nov. 1, 2013… During that four-game home winning streak, Claude Giroux has recorded a point in all four games, posting seven points (3g-4a)… Giroux also has four points overall in his last two meetings against the Caps… The Flyers have a 14-4-3 record in the last five seasons against Washington… Nicklas Backstrom averages an assist per-game against the Flyers (30) and has 42 overall points in 30 games.
The Flyers have all five of their wins when they score the first goal, going 5-1-0, but are 0-6-3 when they allow their opponent to score first… The Capitals are tied for fifth in the NHL in goals per-game at 3.00, while ranking sixth in fewest goals allowed per game at 2.29… The Flyers have allowed no goals in the third period in nine of their 15 games, and one goal or less in the third in 12 of their 15 games…  Washington’s line of Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and T.J. Oshie has combined to record 39 points this season (17g-22a) which is fourth most in the NHL… Radko Gudas ranks fourth in the NHL in hits (63) and has recorded five hits or more in eight of his 12 games… Heading into tonight, the Flyers have 22 man-games lost due to injury, while the Capitals have just three man-games lost to injury.
Schenn leads the team in goals (5), power-play goals (2) and game-winning goals (2), while ranking sixth in shots on goal (29)… He is tied for third on the team in overall points (7), but leads in points per-60 minutes played at 2.07… Schenn also has three of his five goals and five of his seven points playing on home ice this season… Against the Caps, Schenn has one goal and six points in 15 games. Ovechkin continues to be the player to watch for the Caps - he leads the team in goals (8)  and points (16) and leads all NHL players in shots on goal (77) in 13 games… He has recorded at least a point in 11 of his 13 games this season… He is one goal shy of passing Sergei Fedorov (483) for first place among Russian-born NHL players in career goals… Ovechkin has led the Caps, or has been tied for the Caps lead, in overall points in all 10 of his NHL seasons beginning in 2005-06… Against the Flyers, Ovechkin has 29 goals and 17 assists for 46 points in 37 games.
