Day 3: News, Notes & Quotes from the scrimmage

Flyers simulate game situation, ready to kick off preseason slate

by @NHLFlyers /

* Day 3 of training camp saw the groups go out on both sheets of ice for a quick skate around and then end the day with a scrimmage that was officiated by referees.

* Group 1 ended up winning the game by a score of 2-1 with goals from Greg Carey and the game-winner by Brayden Schenn off a nice feed from Jordan Weal.

* Nicolas Aube-Kubel scored the lone goal for Group 2.

* Saturday's Group 2 team included a line of Nick Cousins centering Scott Laughton and Dale Weise, a trip that's been together through all the first three days of training camp.
"They skate well and they're big bodies; they create room for me," Cousins said. "I think we've had pretty good chemistry the first three days. I don't know if we're together in the preseason or what not, but I've enjoyed playing with them. It's been a lot of fun so far."
* On the Group 1 side, one of the defensive pairings was prospects Philippe Myers and Ivan Provorov. Myers participated in all of rookie camp, but didn't dress for the Flyers-Islanders rookie game so this scrimmage was his first game action since the Memorial Cup Final in May.

"It was fun to get out there with the guys and get the intensity up out there and for me I think it went pretty well," said Myers. "I've been practicing for the past month and a half and I was just happy to get a game in."

* Steve Mason backstopped the team behind the pair and liked what he saw when they were out.
"Myers is a big kid and he moves well," Mason said. "Ivan, he was very calm back there. He seems to get out of situations where he has pressure on him with relative ease. It's nice to see. I think there's a lot expected of him coming into this camp. Hopefully he handles the pressure well and has a good showing."
* Travis Konecny did not participate in the scrimmage due to a maintenance day. He is expected to play in one of Monday's split squad preseason games. The complete roster for the game is expected to be announced later.
