The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have recalled 6’2’’, 198-pound goaltender Johan Backlund from their American Hockey League affiliate, the Adirondack Phantoms, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren.
Backlund, 28, appeared in one preseason contest for the Phantoms, where he stopped 26 of 27 shots in regulation and overtime, and stopped all four skaters in a shootout to give Adirondack a 2-1 shootout victory over Albany on Friday, September 25.
A native of Skelleftea, Sweden, Backlund also appeared in one contest with the Flyers this preseason, stopping 14 of 16 shots in 29:27 of play in their game vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario on September 17. He signed a one-year contract with the Flyers on March 26, 2009.
Backlund was recalled after it was revealed that goaltender Brian Boucher will miss 7-to-10 days with a lower body injury suffered on Saturday in New Jersey during a preseason game.
