5 THINGS: Flyers at New York Rangers

T he Flyers play the second of their home-and-home series on back-to-back days against the Rangers after taking a 3-0 shutout loss on Friday… The Flyers have dropped two straight to the Rangers this year, both of them being shut out losses… The two teams meet today for the third time in a span of 11 days, but won’t face each other again for another 91 days, in their final meeting of the regular season on Feb. 28… The Flyers are just five points out of the third place position and final guaranteed playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division at 19 points, held by the their opponent today, the Rangers, as well as the Washington Capitals (24pts), who they have yet to face this season .

T oday is also the second in back-to-backs for the Flyers, who own a 1-3-0 record in the second of games on back-to-back days… In the previous back-to-back games, the Flyers have averaged 35 shots on net in the second game, while allowing an average of 27 shots from their opponent… This is also the first and only home-and-home series the Flyers will play all year… The Rangers own an 0-2-0 record in the second of back-to-backs, losing by a combined score of 9-4… Both the Flyers and the Rangers play 14 sets of back-to-back games this season… The Rangers have not started the same goaltender in their previous two back-to-backs this season, while the Flyers started Steve Mason in the opening back-to-back games (Oct. 8 & 9), but have not used the same goaltender in the previous three sets.

Jakub Voracek has recorded a point in every game this season in which the Flyers have not been shut out (18 of 22)… He is tied for second in the NHL’s scoring race (with Tyler Seguin - DAL) with 30 points and is second in the league with 22 assists… Claude Giroux is tied for second in the NHL in power-play goals scored (7) and fourth overall in points on the power play (12)… RJ Umberger is one assist shy of reaching 200 in his career and is five games shy of appearing in his 700th NHL game… Rick Nash has a goal in each of his last four games and is now second overall in the NHL with 16 goals through 22 games for the Rangers - only two of his 16 goals have come on the power play… The Rangers have posted three shutouts in their last four games and have a total of six shutouts through 22 games so far this year.

Mark Streit leads the Flyers defense in goals (4), assists (9) and points (13) while leading the entire team in time-on-ice per-game at nearly an average of 23 minutes (22:57), including power-play TOI at over four minutes per-game (4:14)… He consistently gets shots towards the net, posting 23 shots on goal in the last seven games, and has recorded three shots or more in nine games for the Flyers this season… Despite going scoreless in two meetings this year, Streit has 20 career points (7g-13a) in 36 games against the Rangers.

The Rangers center factored into all three goals in Friday’s win over the Flyers, posting three assists… He also recorded four shots on goal - the most of any player on either team - while recording just 18:42 of ice time… Stepan currently has a five-game point streak in which he has seven points (1g-6a) and since his return to the line-up from injury has recorded a point in eight of 10 games… He has four points, all assists, in the season series thus far and now averages a point-per-game against the Flyers with 23 points (6g-17a) in 23 contests.
