Young Stars Recap: Flames 4, Canucks 1

by Jason Johnson / Calgary Flames

PENTICTON, BC - Flames goaltending prospect Joni Ortio faced 40 shots, backstopping the Flames hopefuls to a 4-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks prospects at the Young Stars Classic tournament on Friday.

"It was a hell of a hard first game," the goaltender said. "You never know - after a long period of not playing a game, you never know what's going to happen. Fortunately, I got a couple of shots early on and it got me into the game. It took care of itself then."

The Canucks broke the ice in the middle frame with a powerplay marker courtesy of Frankie Corrodo. Calgary responded shortly after in a big way and never looked back, rattling off four straight goals. Dylan Smoskiwitz, a late addition to the prospects camp roster, tallied on the powerplay to get things going for the Flames squad. John Ramage added to the lead snapping one under the crossbar before Eric Roy and Sean Monahan would close out the scoring collecting a pair of goals shortly after the puck dropped to start the third period.

Markus Granlund had another solid performance picking up an assist to share the scoring lead in the tournament with three points.

"It couldn't have been a better game to prepare yourself for an NHL camp," Abbotsford Heat head coach Troy Ward noted. "We're going to have some exhibition games with Bob's group and some of these guys are going to be in those. They're going to be tight. We're going to start slow at times, both in Abbotsford and Calgary, and that's a realization of pro hockey.

"We hung in there. We had a couple of turning points. Obviously Ortio was a turning point and so was Ferland's fight. Those are good lessons for the guys."

The Flames will close out the tournament on Sunday with a contest against the San Jose Sharks before returning to Calgary to take on the University of Calgary Dinos in an exhibition game slated for Monday night at Winsport. The final game against the Sharks can be seen live on calgaryflames.com.
