CALGARY, AB -- Tyler Wotherspoon and the Portland Winterhawks captured the Ed Chynoweth Cup on Sunday evening after defeating the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-1 in Game 6 of the WHL Championship series.
Wotherspoon assisted on Oliver Bjorkstrand's second period tally for his second point of the series and was a plus-three. The defenceman potted two goals and 10 points in 21 postseason games and was plus-11.
In addition Bjorkstrand's goal, Ty Rattie notched a hat trick and Taylor Leier registered ninth goal of the playoffs. Travis Ewanyk scored Edmonton's lone goal.
Laurent Brossoit made 19 saves for the Oil Kings. He finished off the postseason with a 1.82 GAA, a .935 save percentage and five shutouts to his name. The 20 year-old went 14-5-3 in the playoffs.
Portland will now play for the Memorial Cup in Saskatoon, SK. Their first game in the tournament is on May 18 when they face the QMJHL Champions, the Halifax Mooseheads.
