CALGARY, AB -- Tyler Wotherspoon and the Portland Winterhawks have taken a 2-1 series lead in the WHL Championship after skating away from Game 3 with a 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Winterhawks forwards Taylor Leier, Ty Rattie and Oliver Bjorkstrand scored in the opening frame and netminder Mac Carruth made 38 saves in the victory. Edmonton's leading scorer Michael St. Croix notched his team's lone goal.
While they were able to wire close to 40 shots on net, the Oil Kings felt that with the intensity they were bringing to the game, they could have generated more if it wasn't for Wotherspoon and Portland's defensive corps.
"They're not as tough as Calgary, who boxed us out pretty well, but it isn't easy," TJ Foster told EdmontonOilers.com's Ryan Dittrick. "They're very smart with the puck. They knock pucks down and turn it back the other way on the transition pretty quick. When we do get pucks through, we have to get it upstairs.
"(Carruth) takes away the lower half of the net very well, so we have to get it up."
Calgary Flames prospect Laurent Brossoit made 24 saves for the Oil Kings.
Game 4 goes Wednesday night at 7:00 PM MT at Rexall Place.
