CALGARY, AB -- Sean Monahan’s Canada got the better of Mikael Backlund and Sweden 3-2 in overtime in 2014 IIHF World Championship action Sunday.
Backlund, who has a share of the team lead with four goals through the opening six tournament games, was held off the scoresheet. The 25-year-old had four shots and recorded a plus-1 rating in 20:10 of action. Monahan was also kept at bay and did not record a shot in 7:40 of ice time.
Johnny Gaudreau recorded one shot in 14:51 in the United States’ 3-1 victory over Finland while Jiri Hudler had two shots in 9:58 as the Czech Republic edged Norway 1-0.
