CALGARY, AB -- Johnny Gaudreau’s assist with 1:30 left in regulation wasn’t enough to help the United States pull even in an upset by Latvia at the 2014 IIHF World Championship on Thursday.
Gaudreau, who helped keep the play alive to set up Seth Jones’ goal to tie the game 4-4 with 6:34 remaining, fed Brock Nelson to help pull the US to within 6-5 before falling to Latvia. Gaudreau also recorded four shots on goal in 19:16 of action.
Though he was held pointless for a second consecutive game, Mikael Backlund’s Sweden took a 2-1 victory over France to improve to 3-1-0-0 and atop the Group A standings. The 25-year-old former first round pick recorded six shots on goaltender Florian Hardy in 18:11 of action.
Sean Monahan was also held without a point in Canada’s 6-1 victory over Denmark. The 19-year-old had two shots on goal in 8:47 of ice time.
Jiri Hudler and the Czech Republic were inactive Thursday. Hudler’s Czechs also have Friday off.
Canada, against Italy, , Sweden, against Slovakia and the United States, against Kazakhstan, will all be in action.
