CALGARY, AB -- Mikael Backlund was held off the scoresheet but Sweden still managed to avoid an upset by beating Norway 2-1 in action Tuesday at the 2014 IIHF World Championship.
Backlund, who had three goals and an assist heading through his first two games, remains fourth in tournament scoring behind Alexander Ovechkin, Joakim Lindstrom and Viktor Tikhonov.
Sean Monahan of Canada, Johnny Gaudreau of the United States and Jiri Hudler of the Czech Republic were all inactive Tuesday. Switzerland’s Sven Baertschi will miss the remainder of the tournament after sustaining a fractured rib in his tournament opener.
Through three games, Monahan has one assist, a plus-2 rating and is averaging 8:10 of ice time per game. Gaudreau has recorded a goal and two assists and is averaging 16:09 per ice time through his first three games. Hudler also has a goal and two assists in his first three games and is averaging 15:51 of ice.
