-- It was a close game in all regards as Switzerland narrowly escaped with the 4-3 overtime win over Denmark in the first relegation matchup on Monday afternoon in front of 9,398 fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
The game-winning goal came at 3:27 into overtime off the stick of OHL’s Guelph Storm’s Tanner Richard.
In the relegation round, Denmark, Latvia, Switzerland and USA square off in a single round robin series. They will not face the team that they have previously played in the preliminary round as those points are carried over. The top three teams at the completion of the relegation round will be participants at the 2013 IIHF World Juniors, while the fourth-place team is relegated to the Division I Group A. Teams carry over the points they earned from the Preliminary Round from the game against the other team from the group participating in the Relegation Round.
WHL’s Alessio Bertaggia factored in a goal and assist in Switzerland’s win while Nicklas Jensen had two goals in the losing effort.
The next action on the relegation round will see the USA battle Latvia as the Americans try to redeem themselves after a disappointing finish which saw them win only a single game in the preliminary round.
