-- Latvia closed out the tournament with 2-1 overtime win against Denmark on day 9 of the World Junior Hockey Championships at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday. The win solidifies a spot for the Latvians at the 2013 World Championships in Ufa, Russia. With the loss, the Danes are relegated back down to Division 1 Group A after working their way up to the top division for this years' championships.
Demark came into the contest today against Latvia looking for their first ever win in World Junior Hockey Championship action. The teams were the only two that entered the day without recording a single win in the 2012 tournament.
The Danes opened the scoring on an even strength marker by Oliver Bjorkstand in the first frame which ended up being the only goal recorded in the period.
Latvia capitalized on a Danish penalty at the mid mark of the second period with a power play goal by Kristians Pelss to tie the affair.
No scoring in the third period pushed this game to overtime where Nikita Jevpalos was the hero scoring 43 seconds into the extra frame to give the Lativans their first win of the tournament.Author: Jason Johnson
