WHL Playoff Roundup: Sven Baertschi

by Torie Peterson / Calgary Flames

Portland swept Kelowna in the first round

Sven Baertschi's last year in the WHL continues to be one for the ages. The 19 year old has been an offensive powerhouse this season and was a thorn in Kelowna's side throughout the entire series.

Through four games, the winger put up a whooping 11 points - two goals and nine helpers. His best outing came in Game 3 when he scored twice against the Rockets and assisted on both of linemate Ty Rattie's tallies.

The Winterhawks will face the Kamloops Blazers in the second round. The series starts on Friday, Apr. 6th.

Baertschi's regular season stats are nothing short of amazing. Despite missing quite a few games with injuries (hip, concussion), the Swiss forward offensive output was torrid. He scored 33 goals and 94 points in 47 contests which equates to a 2.00 points-per-game average. The Flames were felled by several injuries during the year and at one point, they were forced to recall Baertschi on an emergency basis. He scored in three of his five NHL games.

Baertschi was the Flames first round pick (13th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
