CALGARY, AB -- The Edmonton Oil Kings and Laurent Brossoit made a statement in Game 1 of the WHL Championship Series but Tyler Wotherspoon and the Portland Winterhawks answered back on Saturday night to even up the series 1-1.
Brossoit made 35 saves while Dylan Wruck (undrafted), Henrik Samuelsson (Phoenix Coyotes) and Curtis Lazar (2013 draft eligible) found of the back of net for the Oil Kings in the 4-1 win on Friday night. Wotherspoon was a minus-three in the Winterhawks loss in Game 1.
On Saturday, Portland cranked up the intensity and peppered Brossoit with 36 shots on route to the 3-0 win over Edmonton. Ty Rattie (St. Louis Blues), Brendan Leipsic (Nashville Predators) and Oliver Bjorkstrand (2013 draft eligible) scored for the Winterhawks. Wotherspoon was a plus-one and took one minor penalty in the heated affair.
In 18 games played in the postseason, Brossoit boasts a 13-2-3 record and has five shutouts to his name, tying the WHL single-season playoff record. His 1.63 GAA leads the league and his save percentage sits at .942.
Through 17 games, Wotherspoon has scored two goals and eight points while remaining a key cog in the Winterhawks defensive corps. His plus/minus rating sits at plus-six and he has 18 PIM in the playoffs.
