When Chris Tanev wasn't on the lineup sheet ahead of Game 7 vs. the Dallas Stars, it was clear he was going through more than the usual playoff grind of bumps and bruises.
Tanev is known across the league as one of the toughest customers in the game, always wanting to be on the ice no matter the situation. For him to miss a playoff game - and a decisive one at that - he had to be in significant pain.
In his year-end press conference, the blueliner revealed what he was going through.

"Game 6 in Dallas there, I dislocated my shoulder," he said. "I'll be having surgery ... I believe the time frame is 4-6 months. We'll see how it goes. After the surgery I'm sure our medical staff will have more of an update on how it went and more of an exact time frame ... My surgery is on my labrum, which is torn."
He missed the first three games of the series against Edmonton, returning in Games 4 and 5 - a testament to his dedication to his team.
"I think people won't understand the things he's gone through. He wanted to play Game 7 against Dallas, he wanted to play Game 1 (against Edmonton), it's inspiring and he's a leader and he leads by example in everything he does," Jacob Markstrom said.
"It's tough to see. You want him on the ice and he wants to be on the ice, but it's inspiring to see and for sure he's one of the guys who you can just follow in his preparation and everything he does and the way he carries himself as a professional. I can't say enough good things about him both on and off the ice. I like him out there. I like to have him on my team and I like to have him on the ice.
"He's a tough guy, he's really tough."
Now, mid-way through the summer, Tanev is on track for a return well within that 4-6 month range he mentioned at the end of the season.
"Now, we're still early in it but things have gone really well. He's doing really well," Flames general manager Brad Treliving said earlier this month. "The expectation, and I say that because it can always change, but the expectation is that Chris is going to be ready for the start of the year, if not training camp.
"Chris stayed in town for a bit to start his rehab, he's back in Toronto now. I talk to him fairly regularly, he's doing really well. We're pretty hopeful (with that) time frame. We don't expect that it's a situation that we have to go and replace Chris for a portion of the year. We think he's going to be ready if not for training camp, shortly after."
Tanev is coming off of a career-year which saw him tie a career-high with six goals and set new career-highs with 22 assists and 28 points through 82 regular season games. He dressed for eight playoff games, picking up an assist in that stretch.
Calgary's first preseason game comes on Sept. 25 with a split squad match-up against the Canucks,
one of eight exhibition tilts
the team will play this fall. The Flames 2022-23 season officially gets underway on Oct. 13 with a home game against the Colorado Avalanche.
