The Game Rush: Flames vs. Coyotes

by Kristi Hennessy / Calgary Flames

Jarome Iginla was able to set the tone for the game tonight scoring just 17 seconds in. Shane Doan did manage to tie the game five minutes later however it was Niklas Hagman's goal at the 1:20 mark of the second period that really stung the Coyotes and kept them out of the rest of the game.

Niklas Hagman started the play with a beauty pass onto the stick of T.J Brodie. Brodie fired a slap shot from the top of the circle that managed to squeak between the post and Jason Labarbera's stick. Brodie's third marker of the pre-season put Calgary on top 3-1 at the 5:36 minute mark of the third.

Niklas Hagman saw 16:27 minutes of ice-time including five minutes of power play ice time tonight  in his first game back since being injured in Vancouver.

Hagman picked up the Flames second goal of the night as he watched his hard wrist shot fly past Jason Labarbera just 1:20 into the second period. Then in the third period he set up T.J Brodie at the top of the circle for the Flames third goal and his second point on the night.

The current Phoenix Coyotes roster is made up of 15 Canadians out of a 27-man roster. Of those 15 Canadians, seven of them are from Alberta. Two Coyotes that were on the ice tonight are former Flames, Derek Morris and Adrian Aucoin.

"It was really nice to be out there on the ice and play for the home fans for the first time. I was a little bit nervous before the game but really happy that we could win and put on a good performance." - Karlsson on playing his first game in front of Flames fans at the Saddledome.
