The Game Rush: Flames vs. Avalanche

by Torie Peterson / Calgary Flames
Calgary, AB -- While the evening started out on a positive note with a ceremony honouring Craig Conroy's 1000th NHL game, the Calgary Flames three-game win streak was snapped by a 6-5 Colorado Avalanche win.

Niklas Hagman, Tim Jackman, Matt Stajan, Olli Jokinen and Alex Tanguay contributed goals for the Flames while Chris Stewart notched a hat trick for the Avalanche.

Henrik Karlsson made his second start as a Flame, stopping 30 of 36 shots on net.

The Flames held a two-goal lead until 16:15 of the second period when Chris Stewart snapped home his second tally of the night, making it a 3-2 game. Then, just 29 seconds later, Stewart wired a hard wrist shot past Karlsson, tying the game and earning a hat trick. The Flames offence didn't stall there but the Av's equalizer defleated the momentum the Flames had for the first 35 minutes of the game.

With just over 5:00 to go in regulation, Tanguay gave the Flames an offensive boost with a beautiful goal to tie the game at 5. Matt Stajan snapped the puck to Tanguay and the winger went in with extraordinary patience, outwaiting Peter Budaj and calmly backhanding the puck into the net.

Despite great play as of late, Jokinen has been stifled offensively but the Finn was able to break out of scoring drought late in the second period with his first goal of the season. The centerman also assisted on Hagman's opening tally, was a +1 and put 3 shots on net during his 16:42 of ice time.

The Flames are a mere 30 goals away from reaching 10,000 in franchise history. This number does not include the 15 goals scored as shootout winners but it does include the Atlanta Flames totals.

"I wasn't good enough. I have to take responsibility for this loss. Six goals is too much ... I gave away a couple of cheap goals tonight so I'm really disappointed in myself. I want to play better so it's back to work tomorrow." - Karlsson on his performance.
