Mangiapane shines in 4-1 win over Jets

Andrew Mangiapane had a goal and an assist as Calgary Flames defeated the Winnipeg Jets 4-1 in a spirited tournament opener at the Young Stars Classic at South Okanagan Events Centre on Friday.
"It was definitely a great game, just getting our feet wet as a team," Mangiapane said. "It's our first game back of the summer. A lot of us are trying to get the rust off and go hard out there."
The game was Mangiapane's first on-ice action of the summer. He missed development camp with the Flames (1-0-0) because he was rehabbing a nagging groin injury sustained earlier in his Ontario Hockey League season with the Barrie Colts.

"Being injured and coming back from it you don't know how you're going to react to it," he said. "Getting that first goal helps my confidence out there. I think I did pretty well. It's my first game. I've been off for a while. It's my first game back. I felt good. I'm just trying to get my feet wet and go as hard as I can out there."
Matthew Phillips, Ryan Lomberg and Austin Carroll also scored, and Jon Gillies made 22 saves for Calgary. Matthew Tkachuk finished with three shots and 16 minutes in penalties, including a misconduct and minors for elbowing, cross-checking and slashing.
"It was definitely fun to get back in the swing of things," Tkachuk said. "That's what we miss from being off for so long, are games like that where they're chippy. It's the game I like to play. I flirt with the line. I guess I went over it a couple times.
"I like playoff-game atmospheres and those chippy games and those games where it's low-scoring, one-goal games. I thrive in those. I felt that today."
Jansen Harkins scored for Winnipeg (0-1-0).
Harkins, selected in the second round (No. 47) in the 2015 NHL Draft, opened the scoring at 11:07 of the first period. Skating four-aside, Harkins sped down his off wing before snapping a shot that beat Gillies' blocker to put the Jets up 1-0.
The game was Gillies' first game action since undergoing surgery to repair an anterior labrum tear.
"The goal … it was a good shot but I definitely should've had it," Gillies said. "I was off my angle and I looked up right as he was looking up and I was like, 'I'm screwed.' He shot it right away and put it right where he wanted it. I wanted to have that one back for our team, but they had my back and really took it to them after that."
Phillips tied the game 1-1 just 33 seconds into the second, and Mangiapane's goal on Mikhail Berdin gave the Flames the lead heading into the third.
Lomberg and Carroll scored two quick goals period to push the lead to 4-1. Lomberg swatted a rebound off Eetu Tuulola's initial shot by Berdin at 8:48, and Carroll tipped a point shot in at 12:12.
"To be honest I don't remember much of (the goal)," Lomberg said. "I know there was a shot from the point and there was a nice tip. I turned around and had good body position on the D and turned around, whacked at it and the next thing I knew it was in."
Goal of the Game: With 1:16 remaining in the second period, Mangiapane corralled a loose puck in the slot and snapped his first goal of the tournament by Berdin's glove to tie the game 1-1.
Save of the Game: Gillies made his best save of the game at 15:31 of the second period. With Tkachuk in the penalty box, Jets forward Kyle Connor took a pass in the high slot and wristed a shot that Gillies snatched with a quick glove. "I've done so much practice windmilling it that it's instinctual," Gillies said. "Even that play, our defencemen took away everything else so that's all he had to shoot at. It makes my job easy. Sometimes you get lucky too. The puck found my glove."
Unsung Moment of the Game: Prior to Mangiapane's game-winner, Tuulola poked the puck off the stick of Jimmy Lodge just outside of Winnipeg's crease to get it to Mangiapane. "It was a nice turnover," Mangiapane said. "It was just lying there. I turned around and shot it. It was a nice play by my linemates."
Highlight of the Game: A failed toe-drag by Tkachuk after gaining the zone inadvertently sent the puck over to Rasmus Andersson, who coralled the puck and shot at a virtually open net, but was denied by the blocker of a sprawling Phillips 6:54 into the second period.
They said it: "Every time you step on the ice you're trying to make an impression. You always want to make a good impression. Every time you get out there you want to try your hardest and compete." - Mangiapane, on trying to make his mark at the Young Stars Classic.
"I skated with a lot of great players over the summer and the pace is high there, but this game pace. This is 60 minutes. It's a high level. The games are going to be fast. I was really impressed with our team today. We dominated. It was fun to be a part of and create offence with different guys. I was cycling with a bunch of different guys out there. Our D played well, Gillies played great, and our forwards created a lot." - Tkachuk, on the pace of the game, his first ever at the Young Stars Classic.
"He's got a presence on the ice. He's a different player than I saw in practice to when he plays the game. He drags people into the game with him. He plays hard, he's in people's faces. When the puck's at the net he's always at the net. For me, my take with this is if you're going to play with Matthew you have to be engaged in the game because he's going to be around it all the time. That's what makes him a special player and why he's had success over his last couple of years." - Coach Ryan Huska, on what he saw in his first experience coaching Tkachuk.
Need to Know: Forwards Morgan Klimchuk, Justin Doucet, Mathieu Sevigny, and Brayden Burke, defencemen Stepan Falkovsky and Aaron Hyman, and goaltenders Mason McDonald and Nick Schneider were scratched for the tournament's opening exhibition game. Klimchuk was initially expected to play but tweaked his groin and is day-to-day.
