The Flame revealed!

by Staff Writer / Calgary Flames

LOS ANGELES, CA (January 20, 2011) - Calgary Flames fans cast the most votes to meet their team's new superhero character, The Flame.

The full unveiling of all 30 Guardian superhero characters within the Guardian Project will be held in a special presentation during the 2011 NHL® All-Star Game presented by Discover in Raleigh, N.C. on Sunday, January 30 (6 p.m. MT live broadcast on VERSUS in the U.S. and on CBC and RDS in Canada).

The Flame is deeply affected by the people of Calgary - he has a strong sense of pride in his city and he takes his position as a representative of Calgary very seriously. As a result of Calgary being a young city, and one of the most ethnically and culturally diverse cities in Canada, the Flame has a personality that is multifaceted.

One of the Flame's favorite hobbies is snow skiing, which is ironic considering he's comprised primarily of fire. He has a true passion for hockey, which leads him to be an ambassador for the sport.

The Flame is completely resistant to heat and possesses the ability of pyrokinesis. He has the ability to generate heat and flame in his bare hands and can launch fireballs at his enemies.

He can also focus flaming lasers from his eyes to melt a specific object or blow a hole through a steel door, concrete wall or bulletproof glass. He possesses wings made entirely of flames that enable him to scorch his way through the sky.

"This is an extremely innovative endeavor by the NHL and Guardian Media Entertainment that the Calgary Flames are thrilled to be a part of," said Jim Bagshaw,Calgary Flames Vice President of Marketing & Advertising. "We are very excited about introducing 'The Flame' to the C of Red, and believe him to be the perfect superhero to represent our team."

According to Tony Chargin, EVP of GME Creative Affairs, "We toyed with making him entirely made of fire with fiery wings but when we looked at it he came off a little impersonal. So we went a little more human which really worked, especially since we kept the fiery wings."

With the highly anticipated unveiling of the 30 individual Guardians within the Guardian Project, the Guardian 30 Match-Up is a Facebook application that enables fans to determine the order in which each team's Guardian will be unveiled. Launched on December 20, hockey fans determine which team wins each match-up, with team superhero character revealed daily.

Created and developed by Stan Lee, Chargin, and Jake Shapiro, each Guardian has been derived from its corresponding NHL team, complete with special powers representative of each team and city.

With an initial plan to reach an all-family audience and narrower target demo of tween boys, GME hopes to bring a new audience to the NHL, while engaging the existing, established hockey fan base through a compelling tale of good vs. evil.

Fans can continue to vote for their favorites and learn about the Guardian Project and the individual Guardians, as they're unveiled, atwww.guardianproject30.com and by going to www.facebook.com/theguardianproject.
