The Five Takeaways: Flames vs. Stars

by Kristi Hennessy / Calgary Flames
TAKEAWAY ONE- OMG Line: The Olli Jokinen, David Moss and Curtis Glencross line has been on fire as of late and kept the ball rolling tonight.

Jokinen tallied four points in the first period on Monday night against the Avalanche. He picked up the first goal of the night for the Flames at 4:14 of the first on a nice tip from Mark Giordano’s shot from the point.

Moss is also coming off a four point night on Monday and has seven points in his last four games. He picked up the second helper on Jokinen's goal tonight and now has 26 points on the season. He also showed his gritty side tonight throwing three hits on the Stars.

Glencross did not tally a point in tonight's victory however, he has goals in six of his last nine. Glencross had two shots, a hit and a takeaway in 16:33 minutes of ice time.

TAKEAWAY TWO- Dome PP: The Flames have scored 11 power play goals in their last 8 home games. They continued that streak tonight with Tom Kostopoulos netting the Flames second goal of the night to tie the game 2-2.

Kostopoulos' fifth goal of the season came in the dying seconds of the powerplay as he tapped in a nice redirection from Rene Bourque's shot from the point.

TAKEAWAY THREE- All four lines working: The Flames saw some extra help tonight from a few unlikely numbers tonight.

Kostopoulos picked up his fifth of the season on the power play at 14:09 the second period.

Cory Sarich picked up his third of the year as he fired one past Kari Lehtonen to give the Flames the 3-2 lead in the third period from Mikael Backlund. Sarich's goal which would become the game winner, came at 2:35 of the final frame.

Steve Staios then got his opportunity shorthanded 2:12 minutes later when he caught the Stars sleeping in the neutral zone. Bourque then took advantage of a slow line change and broke into the Stars zone. He saw a wide open Staios alone in front of the net, he made a nice pass over to him who snapped home his second of the year.

TAKEAWAY FOUR- Missing Richards: The Dallas Stars are already on a bit of a slide as of late as they have lost their last three including tonight’s loss to the Flames.

Stars veteran centre Brad Richards did not dress against the Oilers in Tuesday's game in Edmonton as he reported to have concussion symptoms. Richards has 63 points (24g, 39a) in 56 games played with the Stars this season. Richards was riding a six game point streak (4g, 2a) before sitting out against the Oilers.

TAKEAWAY FIVE- Deadly D-men: It's fair to say that the Flames defensemen have been pulling their weight and contributing to the team.

Mark Giordano and Anton Babchuk are currently 27th amongst defensemen scoring leaders with 28 points. Each blueliner recorded an assist in the victory tonight.

In addition to Giordano and Babchuk, Steve Staios and Cory Sarich each added a goal to help lift the Flames over the Stars tonight. Staios picked up his second of the season shorthanded while Sarich netted his fifth.
