TAKEAWAY ONE: Serial killers
In the last ten games the Flames penalty kill has been fantastic. They have allowed 38 power play goals in 213 times shorthanded in their 57 games for a 82.2% success rate (15th in the league).
With that said, the disciplined Flames only took one penalty in 60 minutes of play tonight.
Unfortunately, the penalty that was dealt to Curtis Glencross for hooking came at 17:42 of the third period. Who else, but Teemu Selanne, to take charge on the power play and tie the game 4-4 late to force overtime.
TAKEAWAY TWO: Better with age
Teemu Selanne will be 41 years old this July. You would believe that from watching this Finnish star on the ice.
The Winnipeg Jets draft pick of 1988, plays on a line with fellow Finn, Saku Koivu who is 37-years-old, and Jason Blake who is also 37-years-old. The line combines for 114 years.
This season, Selanne has on pace for a 70+ point season with the Ducks. With his goal and three assists tonight, he is sporting 16 goals and 36 assists for 52 points.
TAKEAWAY THREE: Captain crunch
Jarome Iginla picked up his 50th point on February 7th. His last goal however was back on January 26th against the St. Louis Blues.
He came in at a clutch time tonight against the Ducks scoring his 23rd of the season 5:33 into the third period. Iginla's goal tied the game 3-3 early in the third period and brought the fans to their feet. The Flames fed off of the energy in the 'Dome as Glencross netted the Flames fourth goal less than three minutes later.
TAKEAWAY FOUR: Can't get past Giordano
Before tonight, Mark Giordano was 2nd in the NHL amongst shot blockers with 132. He added another five to his total tonight.
Giordano was determined to shut down the Ducks sharp shooters and sure showed it on the ice tonight.
He blocked five Ducks shots from Selanne, Koivu, Lubomir Visnovsky, Blake and Boddy Ryan.
He also had two shots and a hit in his 26:13 minutes of ice time.
TAKEAWAY FIVE: Regehr rolling
Robyn Regehr had just six points through the first 49 games of the season.
He has picked things up as of late and is currently riding a five game point streak earning seven points in that span.
With his two helpers tonight, he now has 13 points in 53 games. In 53 games last season, he totalled 11.
