Scurfield_Adjusted

The Calgary Flames ownership, management, alumni, players and staff express our deep sadness at the passing of our friend and former Flames co-owner Sonia Scurfield. We send our love and condolences to the entire Scurfield family.
"Sonia lived a life of devotion to her family and her community," said Flames President & CEO Ken King. "The Scurfield family was an important part of bringing the NHL to our city and we will be eternally grateful. We will miss Sonia's friendship, wisdom and support."

Sonia was the wife of prominent Calgary businessman Ralph Scurfield, who was one of the original owners that brought the Flames to Calgary from Atlanta in 1980. Ralph died in a heli-skiing accident in 1985, passing on his stake in ownership to Sonia. She remained a co-owner until 1994.
Sonia is the only Canadian woman to have her name engraved on the Stanley Cup, an accomplishment she achieved when the Flames captured the Cup in 1989 over the Montreal Canadiens.
Sonia was a philanthropist, community leader and business woman whose legacy will be carried on with her children. She was still active in supporting her Flames each year with the continuing tradition of presenting the Ralph T. Scurfield Award to a deserving Flames player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, determination and leadership combined with dedication to community service.
In lieu of flowers, the Scurfield family is encouraging people to donate to the Sonia Scurfield Scholarship at the University of Calgary.
