NEWARK, NJ -- When Eric Roy gets through the media gauntlet at the 2013 NHL Draft, he is sure he'll have a message waiting for him from a former Brandon Wheat Kings teammate who Calgary Flames fans are familiar with.

Michael Ferland.

The pair played together for just over two seasons and Roy is thrilled to be able to join his friend in the Flames organization.

"It's really awesome that I know someone drafted here," Roy said. "He can tell me what it's like, what to expect and I'll definitely listen to what he has to say."

Roy was a key component on the Wheat Kings back-end this season and while the team went through a rough season, he was handed a lot of responsibility and responded well. He set a new career-high with 17 goals and registered 39 points through 72 games.

"(The season) was up and down," he summarized. I'd have to say our team got better as the season went on ... I just keep working hard and trying to get better."

As his numbers suggest, the Beauval, SK native classifies himself as two-way defenceman who can provide a team with secondary scoring thanks to his a good shot and solid hockey sense. He's working on shoring up his defensive game and sees that as the biggest hurdle he'll face as he works on advancing his career.

"That's something I've been working on since Day One. It's only going to get better with time and I'm going to keep working at it."

The Flames have been in contact with the defenceman a couple of times, checking in with him at the Memorial Cup and at the NHL Combine, but he didn't know if the team was leaning towards him.

"I didn't," he smiled. "But I feel honoured to go to the Calgary Flames."
