Providence College punched their ticket to the 2015 Frozen Four in Boston with wins over Miami and Denver this past weekend and you don't have to look far to pinpoint the backbone of the Friars squad.
Junior goaltender Jon Gillies once again came up big for his team, making 52 saves in the NCAA East Regional Semifinal and Final.
On Saturday, the 21-year-old made 29 saves in a wild 7-5 win over Miami. He was forced to make 13 crucial saves in the third period, which saw the RedHawks yank their goaltender for the extra attacker at the 12:48 mark of the final stanza.
Miami managed to score three times but Gillies was able to quell their surge and an empty-net goal sealed the 7-5 win.
On Sunday, the netminder made 23 stops, allowing only one goal, in Providence's 4-1 Regional Final victory over Denver. For his play, Gillies was named to the All-East Regional Team.
Gillies, the Flames' third period round in the 2012 NHL Draft, was also named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. It is Gillies' 12th career Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honour.
