Preview: Flames vs. Oilers

by Torie Peterson / Calgary Flames

CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames kick off the 2015 pre-season with a pair of games against the Edmonton Oilers.

"It's exciting to get some games going against other teams," Dougie Hamilton said on Sunday afternoon. "It's kind of hard to play against your own teammates. You want to compete against other teams.

"It will be fun to get into those games."

Hamilton, acquired in June from the Boston Bruins, will suit up for the first time with his new team in Calgary. He has spent a fair amount of time with the team since arriving in Alberta earlier this month and is feeling very comfortable in his new surroundings.

"The whole team is really awesome," he stated. "Starting with the coaches and all the players, it's definitely a deep team -- a lot skilled players. I think the biggest thing I've seen is the skating. I think the practices are all about skating and you can see how that relates to the way we play. I'm excited for that."

The 22-year-old has been skating alongside captain Mark Giordano at training camp, fuelling speculation about defence pairings in the regular season, but head coach Bob Hartley warned that he would be switching up combos as the pre-season rolls along.

"We feel, and you’ll see in pre-season games, we’ll try a couple of righties on the left side," Hartley said. "The most simple answer that I can give you is we have three lefties and three righties. We try to figure out which lefty works with which righty and we have the perfect combination. We’re going to experiment all kinds of duos. It doesn’t mean that that’s what it’s going to be on October 7th.

"We want to use the exhibition games to give us a real good idea of who is capable of playing which side and different partnerships."

Hamilton will be joined by many other established NHLers at the Scotiabank Saddledome; Giordano, TJ Brodie, Jiri Hudler, Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Michael Frolik, and Jonas Hiller will all remain in Calgary for Monday's match-up.

In Edmonton, the Flames will be going with a youthful roster that includes 2015 draft picks Rasmus Andersson, Oliver Kylington, and Andrew Mangiapane.

In the midst of a strong performance at the 2015 Young Stars Classic, Andersson signed an entry-level contract with the Flames and is heading into the pre-season on a high note.

"Obviously I have a lot of confidence right now," he said after inking the deal. "You can’t get too high either. You’ve got to stay on your level. You’ve got to go to the rink every day and compete for your spot.

"We have a lot of good young players here and hopefully I can be one of the young players that plays on the team. I just have to keep working on my stuff and develop my game."

Both games begin at 7:00 PM MT and will be streamed on CalgaryFlames.com.
