Preview: Flames vs. Oilers

by Staff Writer / Calgary Flames

CALGARY, AB -- The Battle of Alberta is back underway on Sunday evening as the Calgary Flames take on the Edmonton Oilers for the second straight night.

With cuts looming, the Flames have opted to play several rookies in order to gauge where individuals are at. Youngsters Roman Horak, Carter Bancks, TJ Brodie, Paul Byron, Lance Bouma and Sven Baertschi will all dress tonight.

"It's still about evaluations," said head coach Brent Sutter. "Getting a good read on some guys. Each game that goes by is one less game they're going to have opportunities to show what they can do.

"There are more young kids in the lineup tonight. We'll have a somewhat different veteran group. It'll interesting to say the least."

Baertschi, Bouma and Byron all played last night in Edmonton and will suit up tonight in the rematch between the two clubs. Sutter believes the rookies need to revel in the opportunity to play yet again because it's lengthening their audition with the club.

"Young players should want to play every game," Sutter stated. "To show that they belong. There are kids that we're looking at to see whether they fit in or not. I didn't think that last night - and I understand that it's still exhibition - but I didn't think we had a great showing last, especially in the last half of the game with young players and some veterans.

"We need to get firmed up with our team and it's going to happen here soon. Young guys play is going to determine whether they're in the mix or not. It's just the way it is."

Baertschi, who has yet to show any signs of fatigue despite playing in the vast majority of games since prospect camp began, can't wait to get back into the mix tonight.

"I'm really excited," he smiled. "I'm really excited to play against Edmonton again. It could be big revenge for us."

Game time is 6:00 PM MT and will be broadcast on Sportsnet West & The Fan 960.
