CALGARY, AB -- With Monday's cuts, the Calgary Flames are down to 30 players on their roster and players such as Roman Horak, Paul Byron, Lance Bouma, Jordan Henry and Guillaume Desbiens will have another chance to prove they belong on the opening night roster as the Islanders make their only stop at the Scotiabank Saddledome this season on Tuesday.
Horak caught the eye of head coach Brent Sutter in Sunday's 3-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers and the bench boss made sure to credit the youngster in his post-game press conference.
"I thought Horak was very, very good and the other kids had spurts,” he said. "Very, very patient with the puck. He’s an intelligent guy and he’s not afraid to get his nose in there, in tight areas. We saw it in prospects camp in the summer and the game in Vancouver, after the first period, it really started to show.
“He needs to keep pushing. He’s a talented player.”
Notable Islanders playing in Tuesday night's game are 2011 first round draft pick Ryan Strome, veteran goaltender Evgeni Nabokov, highly touted prospect Calvin de Haan and former Flame Steve Staios.
Staios was invited the Islanders training camp earlier this month and made his debut on the Island last Tuesday. After playing in the Western Conference for several years, Staios is looking to land out east.
"The travel schedule (in the Eastern Conference) is more favorable for a veteran player," Staios told NewYorkIslanders.com. "To be able to play lots of minutes but still be able to recover. And just overall, I liked the fit. There were other options for me that didn’t make nearly as much sense as coming to the Island."
Game time is 7:00 PM MST and will be broadcast on TSN & The Fan 960.
