Preview: Flames @ Blackhawks

by Staff Writer / Calgary Flames

FLAMES (2-2-0) at BLACKHAWKS (2-0-0)

Season series: This is the first game between the Calgary Flames and Chicago Blackhawks. The Flames won two of three games against the Blackhawks last season, each in overtime. Calgary center Mikael Backlund had two goals in the three games. Patrick Kane led the Blackhawks with four goals against the Flames.

Flames team scope: Top defence pair Mark Giordano and TJ Brodie combined for four points in Calgary's 3-2 shootout win against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday. Brodie, who played 27:05, scored his second goal in the past three games to draw the Flames even 1-1 midway through the opening period. Giordano, who gave the Flames a 2-1 lead at 5:09 of the second, has five points (four assists) this season. "Our defensive corps is probably one of the best-kept secrets in the League," coach Bob Hartley said. Karri Ramo made 19 saves in regulation and overtime before stopping all three Predators shooters to earn the win in Nashville. Hartley has alternated goalies so far this season, so it's likely Jonas Hiller will start against Chicago in the back-to-back situation. The Flames are 2-1-0 at the midway point of their six-game road trip, which concludes with games Friday against the Columbus Blue Jackets and Sunday against the Winnipeg Jets.

Blackhawks team scope: Goalie Corey Crawford is expected to make his third straight start to open the season. He has a 1.92 goals-against average and .930 save percentage. Rookie defenceman Trevor van Riemsdyk will likely play in his third NHL game. He was paired with Niklas Hjalmarsson at practice Tuesday. Van Riemsdyk, 23, who has been in the lineup while veteran Michal Rozsival recovers from an upper-body injury, has impressed Duncan Keith with his poise. "Maybe just his demeanor off the ice kind of helps that too," Keith said, according to the Chicago Tribune. "Having a brother (James, of the Toronto Maple Leafs) in the NHL I think has kind of helped him too, training with him in the summers. He's very mature for his age."
